Santa's Helpers
As Christmas became more commercialised (and every large shop had its own grotto) so the Santa helpers grew.
Traditionally these were ladies but in our equality based world, more men are now seen in this job,
Santa's helpers were traditionally the 'back room' staff. They made the toys, loaded the sacks and generally kept everything running smoothly. Nowadays they organise the queue, take the photograph and take the money.
Depending on the situation, Lady Elf or Pixie costumes can be short and sexy, but probably not appropriate for a shopping centre.
Reindeer and Snowman (and lady) are also seen as Santa helpers.
Mother Xmas tends to be more suited for an older lady. Normally dressed in a red, longer length skirt and edged with white fur. It is normal for her to wear a grey wig and round wire glasses.

History of Father Christmas
Different countries have their own unique folklore concerning the rotund figure of Father Christmas, also known as Santa Claus, St. Nicholas or Kris Kingle.
Santa Claus originated as a mispronunciation of Dutch Sinterklaas, which in turn is a contracted form of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas). Santa Claus has a suit that comes in many colors depending on the country. The most common depiction (red with white sleeves, collar, and belt) became the more popular image in the United States in the mid-to-late 19th century. Coca-Cola used this image and it is an Urban Myth that they 'invented' Father Christmas. In fact this red suited image had been used as early as 1915 selling mineral water.
In the UK Father Christmas has been known as rather round figure with a beard in a long green, fur lined coat since the 17th century. He typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, and was reflected in the "Ghost of Christmas Present" in Charles Dickens's 'A Christmas Carol'.
In Belgium and the Netherlands, Father Christmas is assisted by a black faced character called 'Black Peter'. There are many versions of the origins of this character, but due to racist implications, the explanation of soot from chimneys is the most acceptable. Father Christmas rewards the good children and Black Peter punishes the bad (although traditionally they are spared at the last minute if they promise to be good).
