National Costumes
For the purposes of fancy dress, the costumes described below are not going to be exact replicas of any national costume, but an indication of what it is perceived to be correct or a 'tongue in cheek' representation.

Alpine Lady
These can represent several countries from Bavarian Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They all do have their own style, but for fancy dress we have grouped them all together. The dresses can be short and sexy or longer in length and normally consist of a skirt, blouse and bodice with a headscarf.

Alpine Man
As above, Lederhosen traditionally come from the Bavarian region in Southern Germany but are used for Alpine costumes. Consists of long, length shorts (traditionally made from leather), attached bib and braces, undershirt and hat.


American Lady (North)
There is not a national costume for USA although many will wear a North American Indian or Squaw fancy dress costume . The indian costumes are available in many designs for both hire and sale. Ladies will also wear cheerleaders that are normally short and sexy

American Man (North)
As the ladies above, men will wear Indian costumes as well as American Footballers. The character Uncle Sam (used during WII) is also a popular choice.


American Lady (South)
Carnival is a good choice for Rio de Janeiro and there are many Mardi Gras type of costumes available.

American Man (South)
As well as Carnival costumes, as above, Mexican wear is very popular and easy to put together. Ponchos and sombreros can be purchased as can a Mexican moustache. This style of costume could be used for any American theme as it does show up in some westerns.


Arab Lady
Most ladies will go for a belly dancer or harem costume. There are styles that consist of a long dress with a belt, that will suit larger ladies, although the more common consists of pantaloons, crop or bra top and belt.

Arab Man
Men will wear a full length robe with sometimes another sleeveless tunic over the top. Heads are covered by a scarf and an ornate headband. This type of costume is suitable for Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egyptian, Dhabi, Arab Emirates, Iraq, Iran, Afganistan, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan, Palastine etc...


Australian Bushman
To get this look you can use a standard safari suit jacket with jeans and the typical Australian hat, with corks . As an alternative you could always go as Christmas Island (a terrority of Austrailia). I am sure a Father Christmas costume will raise a few eyebrows!


Canadian Lady
Lady Mountie costumes are now available to purchase and are probably the most popular choice for this theme.

Canadian Man
Male Mountie costumes are now available to purchase and are probably the most popular choice for this theme.


Chinese Lady
Chinese dresses are available in long and short styles. The dresses have a mandarin collar and normally a side split. Ladies wear short, black bobs.

Chinese Man
Most men will wear an 'Aladdin' type of costume. These consists of: short trousers and a tunic top with a coolie hat. A long moustache is also normally worn.


Egyptian Lady
Cleopatra is the first choice for ladies. Many variations are available to suit all figures. See also Arab Lady for belly dancers.

Egyptian Man
The authentic Egyptian look for a man is similar to an Indian 'dhoti' which looks like a nappy tied and, for obvious reasons not the most popular choice of costume! An alternative is a 'King' like Tutankhamen. The costume normally consists of a long robe with elaborate headdress. Many men will go as Ceasar or Mark Anthony - see Roman Man


English Lady
Traditionally, the Morris dancer is thought to be an English traditional dress. Normally only available to hire. Lady Beefeaters are becoming more available nowadays. Another alternative is to go for a pantomine character. Pantomine is a traditionally English pastime and open ups a wide range of potential costumes that can be used.

English Man
As above, Morris dancers and Beefeaters and pantomine characters are available for men.


French Lady
Ladies have the choice of a French Maid costume, normally short and sexy or a French Tart. The Maid tends to be black, although other colours are available, with a pinny and headdress. The tart has a stripped top, short, pencil type skirt, a neck tie and a beret. If available a trench coat, with a beret and long cigarette holder gives the impression of the French Resistance in WWII. Other alternatives include: Marie Antionette & Josephine.

French Man
French men are normally depicted as wearing a stripped top, black trousers, beret and a small moustache. French Uniforms are available but normally to hire and not purchase. Other options include: Napoleon and Scarlett Pimpernell.


German Lady
See 'Alpine Lady'. WWII uniforms are available but normally to hire.

German Man
See 'Alpine Man'. WWII uniforms are available but normally to hire.


Hawaiian
Very popular in the summer, Hawaiian skirts come in all colours and sizes and are worn by both men and women. Bras made out of flowers or coconuts for the ladies. Hawaiian dresses and shirts or shorts and shirt sets are available to purchase. See Hawaiian Section


Indian Lady
This type of costume will also be suitable for Pakistan and Bangladesh, although there will be national variations. Ladies will wear a saree which consists of a short crop top and then a long piece of fabric (traditionally 10 meters) which makes up the skirt and the rest comes across the body and over the head. Alternatively, ladies wear a long tunic with loose fitting trousers.

Indian Man
Men will wear a Dhoti (a nappy looking piece of material) or loose fitting trousers worn with a long sleeved tunic. Sometimes a waistcoat will be worn over the top. A turban can also be worn.


Irish
The leprechaun is probably the most popular of costumes to wear for this theme. An elf or pixie costume could possibly be used for this costume. Ladies will wear a green dress with a pinny.


Jamaican
This is a simple costume to put together cheaply. All you need is a loud shirt and a rasta wig, some of these will come with an attached hat.


Japanese Lady
The Geisha costume (made popular by the film 'Memoirs of a Geisha) is the most popular Japanese choice. Normally the costume consists of a long, front opening dress, that has a wide belt (called an Obi). To finish the look, the Geisha wig must be purchased and traditional white faced geisha make up applied.

Japanese Man
These costumes are normally made in a matching material as a Geisha so couples can go as a pair.


Roman Lady
Ladies will wear long dress with drapes either over one shoulder or across the front. Short and sexy versions are available.

Roman Man
Men have the option of wearing a basic toga, or becoming Caesar himself. Still a simple costume that consists of a long tunic with a drape right across the body. Laurels are also worn. Roman soldiers or Centurions are also a popular choice and are now available to purchase along with the helmet.


Russian Lady
Ladies will wear a long, red jacket and skirt sometimes edged with black fur. A fur hat is normally also worn with boots.

Russian Man
Men will also wear a long, red, tunic with matching trousers and fur hat.


Scandinavian Lady
This includes Denmark, Norway & Sweden. These countries are where the Vikings came from. The ladies would wear a peasant type of costume although there are now some versions to purchase that are sexy versions of the male costume.

Scandinavian Man
Vikings normally wear a tunic covered by a fur waistcoat or tunic. They can wear trousers with ties up the legs if the tunic is short. Fur boots are normally included. Vikings wear helmets with horns from either side.


Scottish Lady
A Scottish Lassie is normally a short, sexy costume. They have a tartan skirt, white blouse and a black bodice. A hat is normally worn as well.

Scottish Man
Men will wear the traditional kilt (with or without underpants!). A shirt can be worn, as can a tweed jacket. A sporran is a belt that sits to the front of the kilt. All clans will have their own kilt pattern. Long white socks are worn with shoes.


Spanish Lady
The Flamenco dress is the traditional dress for Spain. The dresses can be long or short and comes from the Andalusian region of Spain. The dresses normally have a tight fitting bodice with the dress made up of many layers of fabric. A mantilla (headdress) is normally worn.

Spanish Man
The Matador is the costume that many men will use for a Spanish theme. The costume normally consists of an ornate short jacket, shirt, large belt, short, ornate trousers, hat and a cape lined with red.


Swedish
Abba is the first choice for both men and ladies. Also see Scandinavian

Vatican Lady
The nun is an easy choice for this small country and is also available to suit all sizes.

Vatican Man
Men can chose the be either the Pope, Priest or Cardinal for this country.


Venetian Lady
Venice is the famed city of the masks. In the run up to Lent everyone take son the celebrations of Carnivale. Fantastic masks are worn to conceal the identity of the wearer. Ladies can also add a beautiful Venetian style gown to accompany their mask.

Venetian Man
The men can go to a party as a Gondolier. An easy costume to put together, you will need a stripped top, black trousers and a straw boater.
