Kids Book Week

Childrens Books Character Costumes are going to be very popular next week with Book Week being celebrated at many schools around the country.Childrens Book Character Costume Ideas

Our retail / hire fancy dress shop based in Essex will be very busy with parents looking for a Book Character costume. When they come in they are all stressed and harassed, but at Props n Frocks, we have a booklet which is full of potential book character costume ideas for boys and girls, which makes their lives much easier. We have produced this booklet on line as well for all of our website customers, so if you want to have a look at our huge range of Kids Book Character Costume Ideas just click through. We carry large costume stocks and we can have it delivered the next working day as well.

As we head towards Book Week next week, we thought today might be a propitious day to mention that the first book ever printed, the Guttenberg Bible, was first seen around this date in 1452. Of course nowadays New Technology is trying to muscle in with e-readers like the Kindle but these electronic alternatives can lack many of the aspects that make the printed versions so good, such as the illustrations and the psychology of being able to see where you are in the book and how big it is, as well as the tangible smell of paper and print  So whether you are a teacher or a child, if you need to dress-up as a book character next week, just bring us your ideas and we will help make your chosen character come to life.

Screen Idols Fancy Dress Theme

Screen Idols is our fancy dress theme suggestion today. Movie Idols Costume Ideas

This costume theme, also known as Movie Idols, Stars Of The Silver Screen, Hollywood Greats, Oscar Stars etc, has many potential characters that you can choose for your costume inspiration. Take a look at this blog that we have previously published, it is full of Screen Idol Costume ideas for men and women. It is also worth looking at our range of film costumes

Today we celebrate the passing of two actors, one possibly a little better known than the other. It was this day last year that Tony Curtis died, having had roles in around 130 films including Spartacus, The Great Race and, of course, Some Like It Hot. Oddly enough whilst checking our facts, we find that he still has a film ‘in production’ – ‘Morella’, based on an Edgar Allen Poe short story, in which Curtis is supposedly starring with Rudolph Valentino! Anyway, some will also remember his involvement in the ‘The Persuaders’ TV series with Roger Moore (if you don’t remember it, there’s a DVD set just out!). As Moore also played James Bond, that leads us to our second deceased star, Lois Maxwell who died today in 2007 and was probably best known for her role as Miss Moneypenny in all the official Bond films up to ‘A View to a Kill’ (1985). By a strange coincidence, Maxwell also featured in a number of programmes produced by the ATV production company, including ‘Stingray’, ‘Randall and Hopkirk Deceased’ and ‘The Persuaders’!

Today’s theme is Screen Idols.

Doctors & Nurses Fancy Dress Theme

Doctor’s & Nurses is today’s fancy dress theme, and it immediately conjures up Carry On Doctor in my head (ooooh, I say!)Dr. Fancy Dress

There are many ways you can approach a Doctors & Nurse costume theme, here are some of our ideas…

  • Doc – one of the 7 dwarfs
  • Dr. Evil – Villain from Austin Powers
  • Dr. No – Villain from James Bond
  • Doctor of Death ( right)
  • Flying Doctor – add wings to a standard Doctor’s costume
  • Dr. Dolittle – Wear a Victorian gentleman’s outfit
  • Dr. Gloucester - Wear a Victorian’s man’s costume and carry an umbrella
  • Doctor Jekyll (with Mr Hyde, of course!)
  • Dr. Watson – Sherlock Holmes assistant
  • Doctor Henry ‘Indiana’ Jones jnr & snr
  • Dr. Frank n Furter
  • Doctor Hannibal Lector
  • Dr. Carlisle Cullen – Twilight, a great chance to become a vampire
  • Doctor Henry Frankenstein
  • Dr. Emmett Brown – Back To The Future – a nutty Professor style of costume
  • Nursie – from Blackadder – wear a Tudor style costume
  • Florence Nightingale
  • 1940s Nurse
  • Angel – often what nurses are called
  • Nurse of Death
  • Night Nurse, wear a nurse costume with stars & moons on it

Let us know what you decide to go as, and send us in an image.

September 28th is a day for celebration of Doctors and Nurses, assuming people still have those sorts of parties. For one thing, in 1864 on this day Elizabeth Garrett Anderson became the first female doctor in Britain and co-incidentally on this date in 1979, the first episode of the MASH TV series, set in a medical unit during the Korean War, was premiered. For those already in the medical profession this can be an easy and inexpensive party idea, although taking your work home with you might not be ideal.  For those who would like a bit more variety, why not broaden it out to a uniforms, professions or emergency services theme?  After all, if your career is different to the one you had originally envisioned, perhaps we can help you make your dreams come true (even if it is just for the length of a party).Doctor’s & Nurses

Disney Themed Costume Party

Disney is the fancy dress theme we suggest today. We have produced quite a few blogs on Disney Characters Costumes. It is worth taking a look at them as well as looking atDisney Costume Ideas the more popular characters, some of the blogs will also go into some of the lesser known characters for more costume variation.

Please be aware that a lot of Disney characters are covered by a license. This means that you really should only purchase a costume that has been registered as a Disney Trademark. Copies do exist to purchase. Some of the lesser known characters could be covered by using other generic costumes I.E.. a standard rabbit for Br’re Rabbit. Props n Frocks stock a good range of Disney costumes – why not take a look.

Disney costumes are great for groups and couples. Anyone who is stuck for ideas for Disney couple costumes should check out the link, it is full of great costume ideas.

If you scroll down the various posts in the Disney section of this blog, you will see different characters that you may have forgotten about. One of the main themes about Disney is that there is generally a baddie in every story, with the ‘goodie’ coming out tops in the end. But what makes, a baddie? Take a look at Disney villains background checks to see why.

Today is designated by some as Fun and Fancy Free Day. Why? Well it’s nothing to do with fancy dress as such and more to do with a film of that name being released this day in 1947. The movie in question was a ‘portmanteau’ Disney creation, involving several ‘shorts’ being put together to create a feature-length film – something the Studio did regularly in the 1940s because of the war effort. One of these shorts was ‘Mickey and the Beanstalk’. Featuring Mickey plus Donald Duck and Goofy, it was a retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk story but it is notable that this was the last time that Walt Disney himself voiced his most famouse creation – he had become too busy with his various projects! Later this week it will be the 40th anniversary of the opening of Disney World Florida, so you’ve double the excuse for a Disney themed event this week.

Adele Wiseman, Managing Director of Props ‘n’ Frocks Fancy Dress, said: “We are proud to support Essex Air Ambulance and the ‘Go Yellow’ fundraising week. It has been proven that dressing up in a costume, or wearing an accessory, really increases fundraising potential & Props ‘n’ Frocks are more than happy to help.”

This week as part of the ‘Go Yellow’ appeal the County’s life-saving helicopter will be making special landings (subject to emergency call outs) at various locations in order to promote the Charity and thank the people taking part who keep raising vital funds. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get up close and personal with the helicopter and Crew!

The Essex Air Ambulance will be making special landings at the following locations:

  • Display a poster at your place of work, or in your shop, and put out a collection box
  • Brandish a ‘Go Yellow’ banner for us before the event and raise awareness
  • ‘Go Yellow’ yourself: don’t be scared to look silly or do something silly (that’s what it’s all about!) and raise money
  • Hold an event – how about a yellow themed cocktail party or a yellow quiz?
  • Challenge yourself with something ‘Go yellow’ themed and raise sponsorship
  • Donate £1 for the week – or consider joining our Flight for Life Lottery (In the weekly draw up to £1000 can be won and up to £25,000 in the Superdraw!)

Anything goes, so get in touch with your ‘Go Yellow’ ideas and we’ll do all we can to help. We’re also giving you the chance to WIN a visit to our Air Base in Earls Colne and a tour of our brand new Visitor Centre where you can learn all about the Charity and visit the helicopter.

Nina Benscher, Essex Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager, said: “We are so grateful to everyone at Props ‘n’ Frocks for their support and for the fantastic yellow costumes donated. Go Yellow is a really fun and exciting way to raise the awareness of Essex Air Ambulance and help the funding that is vital to keeping us flying. You could do literally anything to take part, the more weird and wacky the ideas the better! We want everyone to get involved and take part; we hope that local communities will show their support and Go Yellow. We would love to hear what you are going to do so register to take part today!”

Notes to Editor: The Essex Air Ambulance is a vital life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). It costs around £250,000 each month to cover all charitable costs and aircraft operations including the provision of doctors. The service enables clinicians and life-saving support equipment to be rushed to the scene of an incident and the patient can be flown to an appropriate hospital. The Essex Air Ambulance receives no National Lottery funding and is reliant upon donations from the public and local businesses to raise funds in order to keep the Air Ambulance flying.
