Today we pay tribute to one of the great comediennes of all time as it is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lucille Ball. Having been an accomplished actress in the 1930s and 40s, the 1950s saw Lucille Ball move into the developing world of television and create a series of ground-breaking sitcom shows, supposedly about the mishaps of a fictional family, but featuring her then husband Desi Arnez. The most successful shows ‘I Love Lucy’, and ‘The Lucy Show’ which ran through the 60s into the 70s through repeats had enabled her to set up her own production company ‘Desilu’ with her husband, and this brought other memorable 50s shows such as ‘Whirleybirds’ to the screen. Although she did some Broadway acting work and made a few film appearances, an attempt to revive her sitcom career in the 80s was a failure. Despite ‘I Love Lucy’  featuring briefly in the film Crocodile Dundee. She died on April 26th 1989 but her legacy lives on.
