Earlier on this week we were speaking about Michael Jackson, and today one of the pop celebrities of the noughties, Cheryl Cole (born Cheryl Ann Tweedy) will be celebrating her birthday.  From her first sortie into the world of TV stardom back in 2002 on Pop Stars: The Rivals (where she became a member of Girls Aloud) Cheryl Cole has not been far out of the limelight.  A new single ‘Call My Name’ and album ‘A Million Lights’ were released earlier this month and from our perspective it is always interesting to see what she is wearing. A few years ago the red & black military style costume she wore for ‘Fight for this Love’ caused a sensation and at Props & Frocks we are always looking for the next big thing!

We are pleased to introduce the Props & Frocks Fancy Props n Frocks fancy dressDress Festival van.  Yes, we are getting into festival season & you may see the Props & Frocks festival & event van turn up at a venue near you. Full to the brim with everything you need regarding fancy dress at your festival, if you see us out and about, be sure to come over and say hello!

The name Rod Serling will not be immediately familiar to most people but he was the American writer behind the innovative TV series The Twilight Zone and the lesser-known Night Gallery. Today is the anniversary of his death in 1976. The Twilight Zone explored what one might call science-fiction stories of mystery and imagination (with a twist of horror) and its success spawned a good number of similar shows (some of you might recall Roald Dahl’s ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ in this country).

At a time when issues of corporate sponsorship are in the news, Serling had similar problems with the sponsors of his early shows during the Fifties – on one occasion he had to change the line ‘Have you got a match?’ just because Ronson lighters sponsored that particular episode and in another the Ford Motor Company refused to allow the New York Chrysler building be seen in a shot. Given the ingenious ways some are using to get around restrictions on use of names and logos in the current situation, today we thought we would celebrate Ingenuity and Imagination, or, as someone said in respect of some of the heavy-handed behaviour seen recently ‘You Couldn’t Make It Up’ – there’s always a challenge.

At a time when money (or lack of it) is much on people’s minds, today is the anniversary of the first  ATM ‘hole-in-the-wall’ cash machine, opened in Enfield in 1967. Although the early machines were a bit cumbersome (an early Barclays version involved cheque-like punchcards which allowed you to have ten pounds at a time!), we can see this as the point at which money really began to talk – mostly ‘Goodbye’. Today we thought we would suggest a Money-orientated theme.

In some ways, the arrival of the Euro rather spoilt things for many of the currencies (although some Euro-countries seem to be spoiling things right back!) To paraphrase the old 10cc hit, to be Franc, if you have a Yen to make your Mark, at a Money Makes The World Go Round event, then come and see us here at Props & Frocks – we won’t make a Drachma out of a crisis (the Greeks have their own  problems).

In America on this day in 1974 the Universal Product Code (early barcode) was first used. The first item to be scanned was on a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum. The barcode has now become an essential item for many retailers, but there are still some products that cannot be barcoded at present. For example, take our enormous range of costumes for hire. We do have our own method of stock control and although many of our sale items are online, when it comes to our hire costumes, barcoding individual items might be a touch impractical. The simple reason being, that many of the costumes in our fantastic and wide-ranging collection do not just consist of one item. Take something as simple as an Alice in Wonderland outfit, which can comprise five items to make up the costume. First of all, there is the blue dress itself, which is often partially covered by a white Victorian style apron and then there is the blue Alice headband. A suitable wig and socks might also need to be added to complete the look.  A male might want to go to a story book party as Captain Hook or a pirate. In this case, there is the shirt, trousers, coat, belt, hat, wig, hook, sword. This could give you a total of eight items for the basic costume, but then there are also additional accessories you might wish to add, such as a pirate bag (to store your cash, as many costumes do not come with pockets) rings, headbands, earring, eye-patch, pistol, etc.. Some of these accessories we might sell, rather than hire, as they may be difficult or time-consuming to clean, or could easily get lost or mislaid, and the cost of sale is such that it makes sense to do this.

Dead Icons Fancy Dress Theme

Should Guests Follow a Fancy Dress Theme?

Continuing yesterday’s fancy dress theme on how far you go to impose/enforce a costume Props and Frocks charity daydress code. Obviously we have to declare a bit of a vested interest, but most would agree that if you have gone to the trouble of putting the event together, you would expect people to show a bit of effort themselves.

We have all heard the excuses ‘Too busy to get anything sorted’ or ‘Couldn’t get what I wanted from the Internet in time’ (did they come to us?). Sometimes the hosts have foreseen this eventuality and have a few spare costumes and accessory items to hand for the benefit of these busy and/or disorganised people. Then there are those who brazen it out with ‘I don’t do fancy dress’ (but seem quite happy to do the party thing). Non-participation is always a problem at fancy dress parties, but if enough people have entered into the spirit and made the effort, those who do not dress up will be the odd ones out and, hopefully, will be made to feel suitably shamed. On the other hand, we did hear of a medieval themed event, where forfeits were demanded from the plain clothes party people and a pair of stocks prop was put to good use.

When it comes down to it, in most cases, the invitees are your acquaintances, so you are in the best position to judge how you treat the dress code – strict rules to be enforced or just general guidelines?

What do you think? should guests honour the theme, or should they turn up at the event in ‘normal’ clothing? Please let us know your thoughts…
