Last week we were discussing the Eurovision Song Contest and today is the actual day 56 years ago in 1956 that it first took place. Considering that satellite technology did not exist when it was created (apparently it worked on a terrestrial microwave network – whatever that might be) it is now one of the longest running TV programmes in the world. This got us thinking about other costume related items that have stood the test of time, or even been record breaking.  When we started researching TV shows, this became hugely mind-boggling. First of all they can be divided into specific countries, genres, and time frames. Some of the longest running programmes are factual ones, such as ‘Panorama’ in the UK and ‘Meet the Press’ in the US, which really do not have much scope when it comes to costuming.

What is more relevant is the longest running animated series in the US, which is ‘The Simpsons’. It started in December 1989 and over the years we have had many requests for yellow make-up, masks and costumes to represent the various characters depicted in the series. Not to mention the ‘celebrities’ who have also appeared.

Talking of celebrities are you getting involved with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations taking place in less than a fortnight’s time? The range of celebrity masks we stock, particularly the Royal Family masks, have been flying out the door over the past few days in preparation for this mammoth event, so make sure you don’t miss out and pick up/order yours today.
