According to our calendar, Terry Nation was born today in 1930. Although the name may be vaguely familiar, Doctor Who fans will know that this is the man who invented the Daleks. He did many other things, such as devising a whole host of other Doctor Who monsters creating and writing cult space series Blake’s Seven. He also contributed to other series’ such as The Avengers (the John Steed and partner lot, not the recent superheroes), but it is the Daleks he is best known for. Unfortunately, whilst they continue to crop up on the ongoing Doctor Who series’ (last time they had devised a cunning plan to become colour-coded), their costume incarnation has been less successful: Although the costume has evolved a little, like the daleks themselves, the primary incarnation resembled a decorated tent with a sink plunger, with the risk that the ‘victim’ might die of laughter.
