Today’s fancy dress theme is all about the 80′s as today is Tom Cruise’s 49th birthday (born 1962). One of the most popular and enduring images of any Tom Cruise film is his role as Maverick in the 1986 film Top Gun. This went on general release in the UK on the 3rd October, which means that in 2011 it will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Theoretically Top Gun 2 is supposedly in development, but with a current proposed date of 2013, we won’t be holding our breath. Eighties parties are still extremely popular with us here at Props N Frocks, but many people find it a challenging theme as the range of 1980s costumes is still developing. As we have mentioned previously, there are various 1980s films for which we have costumes. These include Amadeus, Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters; an Officer and a Gentleman and, of course, Top Gun. But if you are not interested in films from the period, maybe music might be more to your taste. Whether it’s the New Romantic era, punk, heavy metal, rock or pop, we have costumes for all sorts of 1980s musical stars. This was the time when music came of age and the MTV generation was born.

Today we go retro with all things 1980s for our fancy dress theme, as we celebrate the birth of John Belushi, who was born on January 24th 1949. Unfortunately, he met an untimely death, aged just 33 years, from a drug overdose on March 5th 1982, but he still represents one of the classic films to come out of the 1980s, ‘The Blues Brothers’. As you no doubt know we have some fantastic 1980s costumes to choose from. Aside from the Blues Brothers accessories including porkpie hat, tie and glasses we can also offer some other classic costumes from 1980s films. What about a US Naval officer costume as portrayed by Richard Gere in ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’? Or, if that seems a bit tame, you could always go totally OTT as An American Werewolf, Freddie Kruegar, or even the classic Michael Jackson Thriller outfit.
Talking of Michael Jackson (which of course a lot of people have been recently) he was one of the classic musical artists of the 1980s, and subsequent decades, who was constantly reinventing his style. Other Eighties popstars you could go as include Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and Adam Ant. Take a look at our range of 1980s costumes
Some 80s films that may help you with costume inspiration…
How about having a fancy dress party to dance off the extra weight you have accumilated over the festive period? The third and final day of the New Year weekend/Bank Holiday for many of us, (assuming you are not one of those people who have had to work). January is traditionally a time to look back over the past year and assess what we would like to achieve in the new one. This is why New Year resolutions are often made. Many of these tend to be health related, such as getting fit, losing weight, stopping smoking, etc..
At Props n Frocks we are naturally in the business of promoting people having a good time, so how does that equate with developing a healthy regime, particularly if you are in a party atmosphere, where quantities of food and drink are likely to be consumed? Well, for starters we would advocate plenty of music, plenty of dancing (apparently 1000 kcals can be burned by 2 hours of techno dancing) and plenty of costumes! We have already given you a ‘Resolutions’ costume theme a couple of days ago, so we thought, what else would get everyone going and keep the ‘good’ feeling? Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and now Nineties parties, will certainly help you to shed those pounds (assuming you do get on the dance floor and party the night away). So, if one of your New Year Resolutions is to get fit, why not do it by having some fun at the same time?
Props n Frocks has a huge range of decade costumes suitable for all decades. The website groups the 50s, 60, 70s & 80s all together to make it easier for you to have a browse. There are some great ideas for couples costumes including:
Sandy & Danny from Grease – take a look at our range of Grease Costumes

Today’s fancy dress theme suggestion is the 80′s…Today we celebrate the birthday of Bo Derek, born in 1956. Some will say “Who?”, and it’s true that she has now somewhat faded from the star scene, but in her day she was one of the sex symbols of the 1980s. She was first seen in 1979 as Dudley Moore’s object of desire in ‘10’, (where she also started a brief craze for cornrow braided hairstyles). With a little help from her film director husband, she undertook other, sometimes ill-judged, projects designed to show off her talents including a version of Tarzan in which, as Jane, she ended up naked and painted white! The 1984 film ‘Bolero’ where she played the love interest to a matador and again managed to lose her clothes rather finished her film career, but she was an undoubted star of her times and in her honour, we’re suggesting 1980s as a theme.
Now, 1980s as a fancy dress theme is growing in momentum as the choice of 80s fancy dress outfits gets larger every year. although still not as popular as 60s and 70s themed events, it will no doubt become as popular in the years to come.
So what 80s fancy dress costumes can we offer you today? Well, you can get your costume inspiration from films, released in the 80′s. These include:
