We thought we’d advocate a 20th Century fancy dressparty today, even though it is a

more solemn day with it being Remembrance Sunday. If you are popping into the shop we will be, like others, be observing the two minute silence at 11am,.

It’s on these type of days that you tend to look back and reminisce, so why not host a party based on the 20th century, or maybe just the decade that you look back at fondly?

With the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I now less than two years away, (and the government starting to plan the commemorations), we thought we would take a moment’s reflection to think about what has been happening since that fateful day in August 1914.

If you have been keeping an eye on our website, you will know that over the past few months we have been gradually assembling information about various decades with reference to costumes, fashions, music, film and other trivia to help you with suggestions and ideas for your event.  Aside from birthday parties, anniversaries and commemorations are also an important part of our remit here at Props & Frocks. Where authenticity is important you need to be able to go to someone who knows what they are talking about.

A hundred years ago there were no computers, no internet (the telephone was only invented in 1875 and was still in its infancy), no fridges, no freezers, no supermarkets, no TV, (radio was only invented at the end of the 19th century) and no off-the-peg clothing. Nowadays when it comes to fancy dress and costumes, there is quite a lot of ready to wear clothes to be found. But, did you know that here at Props & Frocks we often manufacture our own costumes or buy in authentic style period costumes from a wide range of sources? So, why not take the opportunity to browse our website and see how we can help.

20th Century Fancy dress

Our fancy dress theme today is 20th Century. Today we mark a rather interesting anniversary – the first40s Fancy Dress Outfits flight of a woman across the Atlantic, which occurred in 1928. Of course there has to be a first time for everything, but we are curious to know whether there was intense competition to achieve this first. Also, the way the event is reported in one of our sources of reference ‘the first woman to fly in an aircraft’ suggests that some lady beforehand had done it another way, although we don’t know how – a balloon does not seem a very feasible idea. Anyway, the pioneer in question is Amelia Earhart who, of course subsequently became a famous aviator in her own right.  So today’s fancy dress theme is 20th Century Achievements/Events
