Today we are going to have a ‘letter T’ fancy dress party and it is all down to a revolution. On December 16th in 1773 that, in a

major act of civil rebellion, a group of Americans disguised themselves as Native Indians, sneaked aboard British ships anchored at Boston Massachusetts and emptied a large proportion of their cargoes of tea into the harbour. This event, the Boston Tea Party, was a protest against the imposition of a Tea Tax on the American colonists and it was one of the key events which eventually lead to the American War of Independence (and they say tea is supposed to have a calming influence). The Tea Party was so iconic that it has recently become the name of a new political movement in America. However, on this side of ‘The Pond’ we still tend to associate Tea-Parties with the Mad Hatter’s gathering of friends in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. In the spirit of the Festive Season, one could propose an Alice in Wonderland Party, but to offer guests a little more variety, the alternative is a ‘T’ Party! So what costumes do we have beginning with the letter T? Well there are the historical costumes based on particular periods such as Tudors, Twenties and Thirties. Then there are the generic costumes and obviously the named characters.
To give you a bit of help, we have produced an information page giving you so many costume ideas for the letter T, you will be spoilt for choice as to which costume you should wear. Get some ideas and then visit the Props n Frocks website to get your costumes and accessories delivered to your door.

and her roles have encompassed a great range, from a down-and-dirty earthy Titania in ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’, to Queen Elizabeth I in ‘Shakespeare in Love’ (for which she won an Oscar). Unless you are an ardent fan of Cranford, the BBC historical drama where she plays Miss Matty, many would say that she is currently most associated with the role of ‘M’ in the recent James Bond films. This, of course, gives us an excuse to declare an opportunity for a James Bond event, but for those who are more shaken than stirred by such a suggestion, how about a party involving costumes beginning with ‘M’?
Now, having a fancy dress party based on a letter is very popular. Normally, you would be asked to go to the party in a costume based on either yours, or your host’s initials. Alphabet themed fancy dress parties are becoming more popular, we are asked at least once a week in the fancy dress shop. Normally, guests are asked to attend the party in either their hosts, or their own, initials. for example, if your host was called Sarah green, you could go as a costume beginning with either the letter S or G, get the idea? Sometimes, letters are just randomly allocated, it really depends on you.
Apparently on August 26th in 1346 the ‘V’ sign was first seen at the Battle of Crecy, although we’re not sure how someone can suddenly ‘invent’ a gesture. It is said that the sign originated with the English longbowmen showing what they thought of the French threat to cut off their fingers if captured, and Henry V made reference to the matter in his famous speech before another battle with the French, at Agincourt Of course much depends whether the palm is inwards or outwards as to the sign’s meaning, but we thought this was a good time for a V party in the run-up to the Bank Holiday. We’ve plenty of costumes which begin with ‘V’ – everything from the Guy Fawkes-style character ‘V’ from ‘V for Vendetta’ to ‘Queen Victoria’ plus, of course, numerous other Victorian costumes and a few Venetians, but with a letter-based event, there’s always room for some ingenuity.
