Science & Innovation Costume Theme

We have decided that today we would have a ‘Science & Innovation’ as our fancy dress theme (hmmm, weFrankenstein Fancy Dress hear you say, but do not dispair, we have lots of ideas for you…)

Life is full of little mysteries and unanswered questions such as ‘How deep would the oceans be if it wasn’t for all those sponges’ and Why do you always find what you have lost in the last place you look?*. Today’s anniversary gives us the opportunity to discover what it was that was that was the greatest thing before sliced bread – a question that has doubtless weighed on many a mind. The answer is, apparently, wrapped bread! The Chillicothe Bakery of Missouri USA created the first pre-sliced bread on this day in 1928 and hailed it as the greatest breakthrough in bakery technology since the wrapped version. Obviously the world has been a little overwhelmed with contenders for the Next Big Thing since the sliced bread event (and have you noticed how rare pre-sliced thin bread is to find?) but having honoured the speed of progress earlier in the week, today we raise a toast to Innovation. Here at Props n Frocks we are currently awaiting delivery of some of the New Season’s innovative outfits, so be sure to keep the site bookmarked for news!

Take a look at some of our costume ideas that should help you get your little grey cells working on your own costume inventions…

  • Mad Scientist Costumes – wear a Doctor’s lab coat and one of our Madman wigs
  • Going in any identical costume with a friend and going as Clones

‘The Appliance of Science’ Fancy Dress

Today, January 5th, our fancy dress theme is ‘Appliance of Science’.  If you read to the end of the blog, the reasons behind today’s costumeScientist | Doctor's Costume theme will be clear. But, for those of you thinking, ‘Crikey, what could I go as?’ We can offer you some advice…

‘The Appliance of Science’. This was an advertising slogan originally used for ‘products from the Planet Zanussi’. In the costuming context, suggestions can range from Frankenstein’s Monster and the more modern day spin-off, Rocky Horror, to the wizardry of the Ghostbusters’ Proton Packs and the LED-based club-gear. Other costuming ideas include:

  • Mad Scientist Costumes – wear a Doctor’s lab coat and one of our Madman wigs
  • Going in any identical costume with a friend and going as Clones
  • Apple – as in the apple that made Sir Isaac Newton realise about gravity
  • Chimp costume – or any other animal that are used for animal experiments
  • The Fly
  • The Hulk
  • Iron Man
  • Back to The Future – series of films with different eras, and therefor costume ideas
  • The Nutty Professor

Let us know some of your other ideas, it will help everyone else. If you do find this theme too limiting, why not broaden it out to include Science Fiction?

We take time out to celebrate the fact that on this date in history, two scientific developments were first publicised. In Austria 1896, the discovery of a form of radiation which would lead to the creation of X-Rays was announced, and in America, in 1940, the principle of Frequency-Modulated (FM) static-free radio was first demonstrated. Nowadays both discoveries are a part of our everyday lives and taken for granted, with other science advances and innovations exciting the imagination (we always had high hopes for the Flying Car).
