Elle McPherson yesterday and today we have another famous Australian, Rolf Harris, born today in 1930. Rolf’s name often crops up when it comes to an Australian theme event (despite hits with such gems as ‘Sun Arise’, ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down’ and ‘Stairway to Heaven’ we’ve not had him feature as a pop idol request – yet) and as an alternative to Dame Edna, he’s a potentially popular choice (and fairly easy to do, with just beard and glasses required). Those wanting to push the envelope a little further could always attempt one of Rolf’s ‘alter ego’, Jake the Peg ‘with the extra leg’. Although you can get this as a ‘to go’ accessory from some outlets, the extra appendage could be improvised (or perhaps you got a spare leg as a stocking-filler at Christmas) and, with a long overcoat, hat and beard, you are good to go!

Australian Fancy Dress Theme

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Our fancy dress themes are from all around the world these last few days, and today is no exception, with an Australian Themed fancy dress party.Aussie Costume Theme

After yesterday’s honouring of a Scottish hero, it’s an auspicious day for those ‘Down Under’ today as the Australians celebrate Australia Day, based on the founding of the first penal colony in 1788, near what is now Sydney. On the eve of Australia Day the Prime Minister traditionally names ‘The Australian of the Year’ and there are sub-categories for ‘Young’ and ‘Old’ winners, plus the announcement of ‘Australian Hero of the Year’ – hence all the celebrations in, hopefully, some good weather. Up here, in good old Blighty, whilst there may be some celebrations amongst the various Aussies communities and individuals, today is usually an excuse for pubs to get out the flags and corked hats and start talking ‘Strine’ as inspired by Crocodile Dundee and the like.

Australian Themed Fancy Dress

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Why not have an Australian themed costume party mate? This day in 1985 saw the US premiere of the film Crocodile Dundee. (We in the UK had to wait until December that Aussie Costume Ideas year before meeting ‘Mick’, although a strangely similar character was appearing in adverts for Fosters Lager at that time). Aside from acting as a bit of a tourist brochure for Australia, the film was am interesting slant on the romantic comedy, starting in Australia and finishing in New York, with the sequel taking things back Down Under.

Mick became something of a cultural icon, ranking beside Dame Nellie Melba, Dame Edna Everage and the Minogue sisters. Australian themed parties crop up from time to time, usually with someone emigrating or returning to the southern hemisphere, or around Australia Day (January 26th, since you ask). For those not wanting to go the whole hog and dress up in appropriate costumes, which can also include kangaroos, crocodiles, etc., Australian cork hats are an easy option.

We know that an Australian fancy dress theme is not the easiest in the world, so here are a few of our own costume ideas that may help you:

We hope that this list has given you some costume ideas, take a look here here are more Australian fancy dress ideas, let us know what you decide to go as.

At propsnfrocks we also get asked for costumes and accessories to celebrate other national holidays or events. Oktoberfest is currently taking place in Germany and aside from a good excuse to drink copious amounts of beer, it’s also a good opportunity to get out the lederhosen and show off those knees!
