Whilst from time to time we mark the achievements of the great and famous in these blogs, we also like to celebrate those who are less well-known but who have made their mark in one way or another. One such person is Caroline Monroe, who has her birthday today. Although her name may not be immediately familiar, she has a memorable screen presence. In the heyday of the original Hammer Horror Studios, she was the only actress to be on a long-term contract and appeared with the likes of Christopher Lee (in the Dracula movies) and Vincent Price, acting as an assistant to his ‘Dr Phibes’. She is possibly best known , however, as the first female James Bond was seen to kill onscreen. Naomi, a henchman (woman?) of the villain Stromberg, in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’, pursues our hero and Russian spy Major Anya Amasova in a helicopter gunship, taking a little time to flirt with Bond in between attempts to blow him up. Unfortunately (for her), once the fleeing pair have taken cover underwater in their submersible Lotus Elan, Bond uses the car’s inbuilt weaponry to tactical advantage and eliminates her. Although less involved in film-work these days, she makes regular and enthusiastic appearances at sci-fi and horror conventions and in her honour today we suggest celebrating the side-kicks, ‘second-fiddles’ and support actors who help the stars look good.
