Christmas Fancy Dress in May, seriously, we are not joking!
So, we are just over a third of the way through the year and thoughts turn to Christmas Costumes! Well at least those of Irving Berlin did 70 years ago, as he wrote and registered the song ‘White Christmas’ about now in 1942. The song is said to have sold the greatest number of copies ‘of all time’ (as opposed to Elton John’s ‘Candle in the Wind’ which sold the greatest number of copies ‘since UK & US charts started’). It is a perennial favourite, although it initially did not perform too well – possibly because it was released as part of an album of Bing Crosby songs in July of that year, but as Christmas grew nearer, the song caught on and acquired its now legendary status. Oddly enough, Christmas in the summer is not that rare an occurrence as here at Props & Frocks we are frequently being asked for Santa outfits and other festive wear. Usually this is when someone has the idea of a novel twist for an Australian theme to go with a British summer-time barbeque. Sometimes the weather also plays its part!

Great excitement in the Netherlands today as St Nicholas (or ‘Sinter Claus’) arrives! Saint Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Children and today is actually St Nicholas’ Eve as his ‘day’ is tomorrow but Dutch tradition has it that he arrives from Spain by boat today (the event is televised). He then spends the following day delivering presents to children who put out clogs and shoes for filling. They may also put out carrots and hay for his horse. Over this time there are special parties and ‘secret Santa’-style events. St. Nicholas’s costume is similar to that of a red archbishop’s outfit but like ‘our’ Santa Claus, he has a beard. He is also often accompanied on his travels by Zwarte Piet (‘Black Peter’) who has the list as to who has been good and bad in the past year, and, in theory, is responsible for punishing those who haven’t made the grade.
And what happens come December 25th? Although it is a more low key affair, another entity, the Christmas Man comes from Lapland and delivers more presents!

Today we thought we would roll on another few weeks and introduce the concept of Christmas. ‘Oh no, not Christmas already’ we hear you cry, but to be honest if we don’t start mentioning it, someone else will. As our business is fancy dress we are of course talking the Christmas party. It is normally immediately after the August Bank Holiday that offices and businesses start looking at potential ideas for their Christmas party. Will it be an organised event with everything included? ‘Perhaps we could go to a restaurant or a pub?’ ‘Could we do something in the building where we work?’ These are all questions that need to be answered and quite often people will be looking around to see what offers the best value for money. From our point of view, the question ‘Will we be going in fancy dress?’ is obviously pertinent, but the next few weeks are usually spent on getting ideas and coming up with a venue/plan. Christmas Fancy Dress is today’s costume theme as we are 172 days into the year and today is the longest day of the year, marking the Summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and, obviously, the Winter solstice for those in the southern hemisphere. It is a perpetual mystery to many that this day occurs before the Summer seems to have got really started (although we did have some interestingly uncharacteristic weather earlier in the year this time) – it’s probably all to do with the differences between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The other problem is that whether you are celebrating the event at Stonehenge, in some other festival field or just watching it on telly (it’s usually the only news coverage the Druids get), the Sun cannot always be relied upon to appear on cue. Hedge your bets by working on a Christmas theme –only 186 days to go and its downhill all the way!
