Okay, so you were originally going to be putting up your tree and decorations this
Angel Wings – Giant Feather
weekend, but our piece about forward-planning yesterday got you thinking. It has been noticeable this year that more people are trying to work out Christmas costumes for themselves, instead of buying ‘off-the-peg’ (or off the Internet). This has the advantages that it might work out cheaper and that whatever you come up with will at least be original, with no-one else turning up in an identical outfit. Of course, the best laid plans can go to pot if things get a little hectic, and you may find yourself running out of time – although sometimes some of the best creations (well, the ones that get the best reaction) are the ones thrown together at the last minute. Be that as it may, as we said yesterday, even if you are ‘doing-it-yourself’, here at Props & Frocks we may be able to help you with ideas or the odd hard-to-find Xmas accessory. We always like a challenge!
Christmas Fancy Dress is today’s costume theme as we are 172 days into the year and today is the longest day of the year, marking the Summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and, obviously, the Winter solstice for those in the southern hemisphere. It is a perpetual mystery to many that this day occurs before the Summer seems to have got really started (although we did have some interestingly uncharacteristic weather earlier in the year this time) – it’s probably all to do with the differences between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The other problem is that whether you are celebrating the event at Stonehenge, in some other festival field or just watching it on telly (it’s usually the only news coverage the Druids get), the Sun cannot always be relied upon to appear on cue. Hedge your bets by working on a Christmas theme –only 186 days to go and its downhill all the way!

Adult Christmas Tree Outfit
about is what to costume to dress up as if you are going out – if indeed you are going in costume at all. We do find, from previous years, that Christmas Eve is the time when the youngsters go out wearing their Christmas outfits. The girls we have found, tend to like to wear a sexy Miss Christmas outfit or Elf costume, and the men may go out in a funnier costume, such as a Christmas Tree, or a traditional Father Christmas costume. Money can get a bit tight around Christmas buying everyone presents, so we offer a great range of cheap Christmas costumes including a 3 piece santa costume for just £7.65 and it even includes a beard!
In some cases you might be dressing up for a meal. In many parts of Eastern Europe, Christmas Eve sees families embarking on a supper of twelve meatless dishes denoting the twelve months of the year and the twelve apostles. In France and French-speaking parts of the world such as French-Canadian Quebec often hold a Réveillon, a feast of a luxurious nature designed to keep the participants ‘entertained’ until midnight and beyond. There are also traditions of special meals and foods in other parts of the world.
On the other hand you might be dressing up to go to a religious service or concert. Victorian costumes tend to be very popular at this time and help to create an olde feel to the event. Christmas Carols are an integral part of the Christmas season. Although many are based on early traditional tunes, they really did not catch-on until the late 19th century. The idea of having a carol concert on Christmas Eve (as an alternative to, or in addition to the Midnight Mass) was apparently started at Truro Cathedral in 1880, some say as an alternative entertainment to the lure of the ale-house. Similarly, despite its name, ‘Midnight Mass’ can to be held a hour or two before midnight these days, possibly for much the same reasons! Alternatively, you might just be going to a costume party, in which case we will be very happy to cater to your last minute needs. Happy Christmas from us all at Props n Frocks.
Today, we offer you a christmas themed fancy dress party. A bit early – we hear you say but December 5th is special day for
Santa Claus Outfits
children on the continent (especially the Netherlands and Belgium) as it is the Feast Day of St, Nicholas, the Patron Saint of Children. Traditionally on this day St Nicholas (from whom Santa Claus is derived, as he is called Sinterklass in Dutch), having arrived from Spain by boat and, helped by one or more assistants, called Zwart Piets (or ‘Black Peters’ who are dressed as page-boys and have blackened faces), distributes small gifts to children. In an event similar to that of Christmas Eve, children leave shoes in front of fireplaces (along with hay and carrots for St Nicholas’ horse) and in the morning find the shoes filled with sweets and/or small gifts. Do you need a better excuse to start the Christmas celebrations?
To be honest, dressing up as a ‘Black Peter’ is probably not very PC, but if you want to take the risk, wear our Tudor Man costume and blacken your face with some snazaroo face make up.
For the more traditional Christmas costumes, check out our main Christmas page that will take you to our large range of adult Christmas costumes, including Father Christmas costumes, sexy Miss Christmas costumes, snowmen and much more. We also stock a large range of school nativity costumes and animal masks, ideal for school plays.
