Christmas Fancy Dress is today’s costume theme as we are 172 days into the year and today is the longest
day of the year, marking the Summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and, obviously, the Winter solstice for those in the southern hemisphere. It is a perpetual mystery to many that this day occurs before the Summer seems to have got really started (although we did have some interestingly uncharacteristic weather earlier in the year this time) – it’s probably all to do with the differences between the Julian and Gregorian calendars. The other problem is that whether you are celebrating the event at Stonehenge, in some other festival field or just watching it on telly (it’s usually the only news coverage the Druids get), the Sun cannot always be relied upon to appear on cue. Hedge your bets by working on a Christmas theme –only 186 days to go and its downhill all the way!
