Comedy Fancy Dress Theme

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Today we celebrate ‘comedy’ with our fancy dress theme suggestion. This is one theme, where Vicky Pollard - Little Britain Costume although all fancy dress is funny, if you get what we mean, you may want to look at our range of novelty costumes, which offer a slightly ‘tongue in cheek’ way of looking at the world!

Comedy is quite difficult as what is funny to one person, is just boring to another. To get some costume inspiration, you may want to look at classic comedy films or television series, such as Del Boy & Rodney from ‘Only Fools & Horses (yes, we do stock the masks for these characters).

Another great option is dressing up as one of the Little Britain Characters, we stock Daffyd, Andy & Vicky Pollard costumes.

You could also wear a jester’s costume, their lives actually depended on them being able to make people laugh.

Some comedians wear props that makes them instantly recognisible, for example,Tommy Cooper wore a red fez hat and this would be an easy costume option for those of you who are not that keen on dressing up in costume.

Look for other costume inspiration where a comedian has played a major character in a film that is easy to costume, for example, Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau

Yesterday we mentioned one J Wellington Wimpy in passing and today we celebrate the birth of another more famous bowler hat wearer, Oliver Hardy, in 1892. He is best known for his work with partner Stan Laurel, with whom between 1927 & 1951 he made many memorable films. They were the original ‘little and large’ comedy duo. Hardy also appeared in movies with more ‘serious’ actors, such as John Wayne and Bing Crosby.

Still in the field of comedy, another comic actor and entertainer, Danny Kaye, was also born on this day. Although some find his style of comedy a matter of taste (although as times change, the same can be said for the work of many other comedians), his 1956 ‘Court Jester’ film is regarded as a masterpiece. For many, Kaye was also their introduction to Hans Christian Andersen (who can forget ‘The Ugly Duckling’ song?). So today we celebrate past and present masters of Comedy.

Comedy Fancy Dress Theme

Today’s fancy dress theme suggestion is ‘Comedy’. Now we have choosen this costume theme today as we celebrate the birth

Groucho Glasses

Groucho Glasses

of one of the great modern comedians – Billy Connolly. Born in 1942, Billy’s troubled early life has been well documented, but he moved from welding ships in the Glasgow docks through being a folk-singer with ‘The Humblebums’ (Gerry Rafferty of ‘Baker Street’ fame was a member) to the internationally renowned comedian and actor we know today.

Having a theme just based on Billy Connolly, even we admit, would be quite difficult, so you could look at this theme in a couple of different ways.

You could attend the party wearing a funny of silly or joke costume (although most fancy dress costumes are generally guaranteed to raise a laugh, some are designed to be classed as a ‘novelty item’ from the off). At Props n Frocks we stock a large range of novelty fancy dress costumes, although please be warned some of them are not suitable for a party where children would be attending!

And then you can start to look at some of our famous comedians. Let’s take a look at just a few to give you some ideas…

  • Laurel & Hardy – an easy costume to put together, you may need to purchase a bowler hat and moustache
  • Charlie Chaplin – again a dark suit is required and we stock bowler hats, moustaches and canes to get the finished look
  • Dawn French – easiest to potray her as The Vicar of Dibley, although her partnership with Jennifer Saunders will also give you some brilliant ideas.
  • Jennifer Saunders, best known, without Dawn French as Edina in Absolutely Fabulous
  • Groucho Marx
  • Jim Carrey – dress up as one of his famous characters

Please drop us a line if you have a fantastic comedy idea as this will help others.
