Last week we mentioned the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen in connection with a Fairy Tales fancy dress theme. As World Book Day is this Thursday we thought we might look at these in more detail.
There are some children who find it ‘cool’ to dress as fairy tale characters, whilst others are of an age where it is just not the done thing. With a total of four Snow White films due out this year (one only two weeks away and two going straight to video) we are anticipating that 2012 will not see just the kids wanting to dress up in Fairy Tale Costumes. So, for today we thought we would give you a run-down of our most Popular Fairy Tale requests. We have included both male and female counterparts where appropriate.

After our observations yesterday about the male of the species getting a little more adventurous when it comes to wearing a fancy dress costume, we thought we would spend a little time on the complexities of Couples costumes.
It’s really a question of the relationship. In the true Mr & Mrs field, we’ve got The Flintstones and the Rubbles, Shrek and Fiona, Frankenstein and Bride (they were made for each other) and Dracula and his Bride (or consort) – even Mr and Mrs Potato Head! If you’re aiming for the ‘just good friends’ approach, it’s the complementary costumes that can be useful – famous couples like Robin Hood and Maid Marian, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia and Mary Poppins and Bert the Chimney Sweep, and there can also be less obvious matches such as Miss Muffet and a Spider, a Ringmaster/mistress and a Lion/Tiger and a Rabbit/Bunny Girl and a carrot!
You may need a same sex couple, so don’t forget Batman & Robin (or The Joker), Noddy & Big Ears to give you just a couple of ideas.

Today, we aim to give you lots of couple costume ideas as this is something we are asked for time and time again…
We were mentioning the legendary Marilyn Monroe earlier in the week, and today we celebrate the birthday of one of the celebrity icons of our time, Angelina Jolie, who was born in 1975. Although Angelina, like Marilyn had a somewhat troubled early life, she has now established herself in a number of roles, both on and off the movie screen. On screen she hashad a number of roles but has made her mark as an action heroine, most notably as Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, but more recently as Evelyn Salt (the role she ‘took over’ from Tom Cruise). She was also very active in ‘Mr & Mrs’, where her relationship with Brad Pitt started. Off-screen, she now has a family with Brad, and to many they arguably are the world’s most famous celebrity couple, also devoting much time to humanitarian and charity work. So, today we look at some couple costume ideas, now a lot of ideas can be found on our other couple fancy dress ideas, so here we will try and give you a few more, although some will be repeated.

Today we are promoting couples fancy dress ideas as on this day in 1937, the Margaret Mitchell novel ‘Gone With The Wind’ won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, joining an elite group of ‘one-hit wonder’ literary classics (‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ is another). Nowadays, it’s probably fair to say that most people are familiar with the GWTW story through the film (which itself won 8 Oscars and made British actress Vivien Leigh an international star) and the resulting ‘homages’ – we did hear of a ‘Frankly My Deer Park‘, but cannot find whether it actually exists. The Gone With The Wind pairing of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler (or any other couple costumes) forms the potential costume theme for today.
Now you probably have single friends as well ‘couple’ friends, so it would be unfair to have a purely couples fancy dress party. Why not write down a list of all the couples fancy dress costumes that you can think of (they do not need to be male and female based) and then at some point in the evening, your guests have to find their relevant partner costume – a great way to get your guests to mix. The only down side is that your guests may feel restricted if you actually allocate them a costume, so it is better to let them decide who they will dress up as, and this will leave the actual pairings a bit more to chance and has the potential for some laughs.
Some examples of couples fancy dress costumes include:
Bill, Ben (& weed) – ideal unisex costumes
Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Mr Potato Head – all the Toy Story Costumes
Laurel & Hardy
Blues Brothers
Cleopatra & Caesar or Mark Anthony
Gangster & Gangster’s Moll

Today we take a look at some popular couple costumes. We are constantly asked for ideas for couples when they come into our fancy dress shop. It can be difficult getting 2 people, of different sizes both in costumes that they like and fits both of them.
We spent much of last week bemoaning the lack of female costumes for some types of themes and events. Today we are on safer ground as the birthday of the Egyptian actor and sometime heart-throb Omar Sharif gives us a chance to celebrate ‘Romantic Couples’. Arguably Sharif’s breakthrough role was in Dr Zhivago (1965), the film that also helped launch the career of Julie Christie. (Remember that line in the Kinks’ ‘Waterloo Sunset’ about ‘Terry and Julie’? It referenced Miss Christie and Terence Stamp, another star of the day). It could also be said the TV adaptation of the Zhivago story in 2002 helped rising starlet Keira Knightley upward and onward to better things – Pirates of the Caribbean, for example.
Meanwhile, back in Britain, on this date in 1912, a certain ship was leaving Southampton on a fateful voyage which would give rise to one of the biggest blockbuster films and love stories of all time, namely Titanic.
So, let have a look at some popular costume ideas for couples…
Morticia & Gomez Addams – you could also use some of the other characters
Bill & Ben
Noddy & Big Ears
Batman & Robin – yes, we do supply female Robin costumes
