We thought we’d advocate a 20th Century fancy dressparty today, even though it is a

more solemn day with it being Remembrance Sunday. If you are popping into the shop we will be, like others, be observing the two minute silence at 11am,.

It’s on these type of days that you tend to look back and reminisce, so why not host a party based on the 20th century, or maybe just the decade that you look back at fondly?

With the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I now less than two years away, (and the government starting to plan the commemorations), we thought we would take a moment’s reflection to think about what has been happening since that fateful day in August 1914.

If you have been keeping an eye on our website, you will know that over the past few months we have been gradually assembling information about various decades with reference to costumes, fashions, music, film and other trivia to help you with suggestions and ideas for your event.  Aside from birthday parties, anniversaries and commemorations are also an important part of our remit here at Props & Frocks. Where authenticity is important you need to be able to go to someone who knows what they are talking about.

A hundred years ago there were no computers, no internet (the telephone was only invented in 1875 and was still in its infancy), no fridges, no freezers, no supermarkets, no TV, (radio was only invented at the end of the 19th century) and no off-the-peg clothing. Nowadays when it comes to fancy dress and costumes, there is quite a lot of ready to wear clothes to be found. But, did you know that here at Props & Frocks we often manufacture our own costumes or buy in authentic style period costumes from a wide range of sources? So, why not take the opportunity to browse our website and see how we can help.

Next summer, we are anticipating a return to 1920s costumes with the projected release of the film ‘The Great Gatsby’, originally intended for release next Christmas, but now apparently delayed until the spring. If you think you have heard this title before in connection with films, yes you have. This will be the fourth re-working of the classic novel by F Scott Fitzgerald, who was born this day in 1896, in St Paul, Minnesota, US. He, like his contemporary the composer George Gershwin, who was also born this week (September 26, 1898) and well known for the opera Porgy and Bess, plus compositions such as Rhapsody in Blue, were both closely associated with the 1920s jazz age. Tragically, both died relatively young; Fitzgerald in 1940, of a heart attack aged just 44, whilst Gershwin died of a brain tumour in 1937, aged just 39.

Decades Fancy Dress Party

How about having a fancy dress party to dance  off the extra weight you have accumilated over the festive period? The third and final day ofLadies 60's | 70's Costume the New Year weekend/Bank Holiday for many of us, (assuming you are not one of those people who have had to work). January is traditionally a time to look back over the past year and assess what we would like to achieve in the new one.  This is why New Year resolutions are often made. Many of these tend to be health related, such as getting fit, losing weight, stopping smoking, etc..

At Props n Frocks we are naturally in the business of promoting people having a good time, so how does that equate with developing a healthy regime, particularly if you are in a party atmosphere, where quantities of food and drink are likely to be consumed? Well, for starters we would advocate plenty of music, plenty of dancing (apparently 1000 kcals can be burned by 2 hours of techno dancing) and plenty of costumes! We have already given you a ‘Resolutions’ costume theme a couple of days ago, so we thought, what else would get everyone going and keep the ‘good’ feeling? Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and now Nineties parties, will certainly help you to shed those pounds (assuming you do get on the dance floor and party the night away). So, if one of your New Year Resolutions is to get fit, why not do it by having some fun at the same time?

Props n Frocks has a huge range of decade costumes suitable for all decades. The website groups the 50s, 60, 70s & 80s all together to make it easier for you to have a browse.  There are some great ideas for couples costumes including:
