Dickensian Costumes

Monday, December 19th, 2011

We often get customers in the fancy dress shop, (or on the phone or email) asking us for a Dickensian costume, but getting confused as to what ‘Dickensian’ actually is. TheLadies Victorian Costumes easiest answer is Victorian and any of our large range of Victorian costumes would suffice for this theme, always very popular at this time of the year.

Looking at Charles Dickens books, some of the most popular characters include:

  • Mr Pickwick
  • Scrooge
  • Bob Cratchett
  • Captain Cuttle
  • David Copperfield
  • Pip
  • Miss Haversham – wear an old wedding dress
  • Fagin
  • Oliver Twist
  • Nancy
  • The Artful Dodger
  • Mr Bumble
  • Bill Sykes
  • Wackford Squeers – wear a headteacher’s gown and mortar board (1 eyed character)

It was upon this day in 1843, that the classic festive favourite by Charles Dickens – ‘A Christmas Carol’ was published. Unusual in that it has ‘staves’ instead of chapters, for many, the book is an integral part of the Festive season. As we have mentioned previously, February 2012 sees the 200th anniversary of Dickens’ birth, and although celebrations are being planned for next year, the BBC and others are taking the opportunity to hop on the band-wagon early with some Dickensian productions over the Christmas period: Elsewhere, in the alternate universe that is comic books and graphic novels, there is a new Batman/Dark Knight story ‘Batman Noel’ based on the Christmas Carol concept with the ‘loner’ Batman beset with recrimination and troublesome spirits played by the Joker, Catwoman and Superman.

Victorian / Dickensian Fancy Dress Costumes

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Yesterday, we were speaking about 2012 celebrations with our Kings & Queens fancy dress theme and nextVictorian Costumes School year sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens in February.  Why do we mention it now?  Well, one of the popular costume themes for the run-up to Christmas is Victorian, which of course is the social era that Dickens’ books are all set in.  At the end of this week on Saturday November 19th, from 9.30am-3.30pm at the Princes Theatre in Clacton-on-Sea, is a Victorian Christmas Market, with stallholders dressed in appropriate costume.  This is just one of several events happening throughout the country. In Kent there is the Dickens Festival in Rochester, which is held twice a year (May and December) whilst there is the Victorian Festival of Christmas in Portsmouth, a Christmas market in Wrexham and the annual Victorian Christmas Weekend in Matlock. Some stallholders may choose to just don the long skirt, blouse, shawl and mob cap or the rough and ready costume of a Victorian Costermonger or Chimney Sweep. However, others will go totally OTT with the full Victorian Crinoline and City Gent approach. Victorian costume is not just for the adults, here at P&F we get asked for both rich and poor Victorian boys and girls for school dress-up days.

If you do not want to go the ‘whole hog’ with an entire costume, why not just purchase a couple of our Victorian accessories including:

  • Moustaches
  • Top hats
  • Monocles
  • Gloves
  • Parasols
  • Ladies Pinafore & Mop Cap
  • Girls Pinafore & Mob cap
  • Caps
  • Boy’s Waistcoat
  • Boy’s cap & cravat
