Disney is the fancy dress theme we suggest today. We have produced quite a few blogs on Disney Characters Costumes. It is worth taking a look at them as well as looking at the more popular characters, some of the blogs will also go into some of the lesser known characters for more costume variation.
Please be aware that a lot of Disney characters are covered by a license. This means that you really should only purchase a costume that has been registered as a Disney Trademark. Copies do exist to purchase. Some of the lesser known characters could be covered by using other generic costumes I.E.. a standard rabbit for Br’re Rabbit. Props n Frocks stock a good range of Disney costumes – why not take a look.
Disney costumes are great for groups and couples. Anyone who is stuck for ideas for Disney couple costumes should check out the link, it is full of great costume ideas.
If you scroll down the various posts in the Disney section of this blog, you will see different characters that you may have forgotten about. One of the main themes about Disney is that there is generally a baddie in every story, with the ‘goodie’ coming out tops in the end. But what makes, a baddie? Take a look at Disney villains background checks to see why.
Today is designated by some as Fun and Fancy Free Day. Why? Well it’s nothing to do with fancy dress as such and more to do with a film of that name being released this day in 1947. The movie in question was a ‘portmanteau’ Disney creation, involving several ‘shorts’ being put together to create a feature-length film – something the Studio did regularly in the 1940s because of the war effort. One of these shorts was ‘Mickey and the Beanstalk’. Featuring Mickey plus Donald Duck and Goofy, it was a retelling of the Jack and the Beanstalk story but it is notable that this was the last time that Walt Disney himself voiced his most famouse creation – he had become too busy with his various projects! Later this week it will be the 40th anniversary of the opening of Disney World Florida, so you’ve double the excuse for a Disney themed event this week.
Disney is today’s fancy dress theme suggestion as it was on this day in 1955, one of Walt Disney’s lesser-seen classics, The Lady and the Tramp, was released. Essentially the story is a sort of Romeo and Juliet with dogs – there is a bit of a clue in the title. The song ‘He’s a Tramp’ by Peggy Lee was a popular song and the sequence (or still) of the two dogs sharing spaghetti is iconic Disney, but that’s about it. There was a sequel – Scamp’s Adventure, which released straight to video in 2001, but otherwise the film is a bit low-profile. Take a look at this Disney Costume Ideas blog for lots of the more popular Disney characters.
Here are some of the lesser known Disney characters…
Clarabelle Cow
Horace Horsecollar – both of these characters are from very early Disney brainstorming inthe 1930s
Disney is today’s fancy dress theme, take a look at some of our Disney costume suggestions in these other blog posts. Our theme suggestion all started with elephants! Read on to find out more…
Despite it always being claimed that the USA does things bigger, better etc., we are told that today in 1796 the first elephant was seen in America, having arrived from India. The US was a bit of a late starter here, as in Britain they were first seen during the Roman Invasion of 43 AD, but the Americans made up for lost time by both having the most famous elephant of all time – Jumbo – and the most famous screen elephant – Dumbo. This reminds us that yesterday was the anniversary of the opening of the Euro Disneyland Resort (which was later renamed Disneyland Paris) in 1992. Disney is, of course, a popular costume theme but having spent much of last week noting the inequality between the sexes, today’s Disney connection got us thinking on another related topic. What is it with princesses? Whilst we have nothing against the Disney Princesses as such, (and of course we have a nice fairy-tale wedding in prospect at the end of the month), does every girl (of whatever age) necessarily yearn to be a princess? The costume shops and catalogues are full of the Princesses from Cinderella and Snow White to the latest recruit, Rapunzel, but where are the alternatives? Minor Maleficents, cute Cruellas and quaint Evil Queens? Do none of the small set want to be wicked for once? The Evil League obviously needs to get themselves a better PR team!
Yesterday we looked at musicals as our fancy dress theme and today we find yet another one, groundbreaking in its own way. Walt Disney’s
Ladies Snow White Costume
‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ was premiered on December 21st 1933 and its claim to fame is that it is the first feature-length cartoon film. Whilst Disney had become famous for his short cartoons, featuring a certain mouse and a host of other characters, when he proposed making a full-length feature, it was said that the project would be a disaster, as a cartoon would not hold the audience’s attention that long. In the event, of course, the critics were proved wrong and the film was a great success. When it came to Awards time, the American Academy (the ‘Oscars’ people), unable to give the film an Oscar because it was too innovative, gave Disney a Special Award in 1938 of an Oscar-style statue with seven mini-replicas in ‘recognition of an innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a new entertainment field’. If the Disney theme is a little too obvious, then with Pantomime time almost upon us, why not work an event around fairy tales?
So, what costumes can we suggest for this fancy dress theme? Well, the answer is loads! This is a magical theme with so many potential costume ideas, including plenty of couples costume ideas. We will list just a few below, but please let us know what you have worn to a party with this fancy dress theme as it really helps our other readers.
Snow White - we had to mention this young lady as this theme is inspired by her anyway. Of course, there are the other characters; Wicked Queen (use a witch costume), Prince Charming and who can forget the seven dwarfs? You may be able to use Elf costumes for the dwarfs and a Georgian costume for Prince Charming
Cinderella – a whole host of costumes available here from Ugly Sister costumes, to rats, Fairy Godmother & Prince Charming outfits.
Aladdin – another fantastic story with a large range of characters to help you to choose your costume. Aladdin, widow twanky (Aladdin’s mother in the Panto version), Jafar, the baddie, Jasmine (wear a belly dancer costume) and of course, the genie. There are also roles for a parrot and monkey.
Peter Pan – Yet another great story, fullof terrici characters that you can dress up as. Firstly, we have Peter Pan, a greeen Elf costume will suffice as will some Robin Hood costumes. Captain Hook, Peter Pan’s arch enemy. You will need to wear a pirate captain costume and of course, you must wear a hook. Smee, Hook’s second in command. You will need to wear a standard pirate costume for this character (as played by Bob Hoskins) or with white hair, blue and white top and a red hat ( if you follow Disney’s version). Wendy wears an old fashioned white nightgown and the lost boys wear medieval peasant style clothing. Green fairy costumes are available top urchase for Tinker Bell. Other characters include: Indians and mermaids.
Alice in Wonderland, choose from Alice herself, The Queen of Hearts, The Mad Hatter or the white Rabbit
Pinocchio – a wooden puppet that comes to life. Wear German style clothing and a long nose
Beauty & the Beast. You may need to wear a werewolf mask to get the beast effect. Beauty wears a yellow Victorian style dress. A lot of the characters (Wardrobe, light, tea pot) can be quite difficult to put together unless you are very talented and artistic.
Hansel & Gretal – wear German style costumes
The Gingerbread Man
Puss in Boots. We stock a large range of cat masks and accessories as well as over boots, hats and swords.
Jack & the Beanstalk – Jack and his mother wear peasant costumes. You may need a very tall friend to go as the giant!
Okay, so we have given you a few ideas, and believe me, there are plenty more where these have come from. Hopefully, this will give you some ideas and get you in the magical mood for this magical fairytale fancy dress theme. why don’t you check out the website for our range of fairytale costumes?
Today we celebrate the work of Walt Disney with a Disney themed fancy dress party as on this day in 1966 Walt Disney, the ‘father’ of Mickey Mouse
Beauty & The Beast Fancy Dress Costumes
and a host of other cartoon characters, died. In a feat never likely to be surpassed, Disney holds the record for the most Oscars ever awarded to an individual (including the unique standard Oscar and seven mini-Oscars for ‘Snow White’). Obviously today is the day to celebrate the work of Walt Disney.
Incidentally, we have heard some comments about there being plenty of Disney costumes for females but not many for males. It is true that the Disney Princesses from Cinderella and Snow White to Ariel and Rapunzel (coming soon in ‘Tangled’) get more publicity and promotion, but if you take a wider context than just ‘pure cartoon Disney’ (not that we’re saying there’s anything wrong with Mickey Mouse, Captain Hook et al.) you have some superb characters such as Captain Jack Sparrow and the male-dominated Toy Story (Woody, Buzz and Mr Potato Head). Come to see us here at Props n Frocks, or visit us online and prepare to be amazed at our selection.
Some Disney characters to help you get some costume inspiration:
Hannah Montana
Alice in Wonderland, Mad Hatter, White Rabbit
Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinker Bell, Smee
Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, Jessie – we stock all of the Toy Story costumes
Today’s fancy dress theme suggestion is cartoon for on November 18th we say Happy Birthday to Mickey Mouse, probably the most well known symbol of the Disney Corporation. It was on this date in 1928 that the short animation Steamboat Willie was released. This was the first appearance of Mickey Mouse (who was almost called Mortimer) in a ‘speaking’ role after a cameo or two in Walt Disney’s early silent cartoons. A star was born and Mickey has since put in over 180 screen appearances (not to mention his work in other media such as comics and video games). He won his first Oscar in 1932 and helped Walt Disney achieve the record for the greatest number of Awards awarded to an individual. He is possibly the most recognisable cartoon character ever and even shared screen-time with his great Warner Brothers ‘rival’ Bugs Bunny in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’. In tribute to this timeless legend, our theme today is ‘Cartoon Time’.
Now using the Cartoon theme opens up a wide range of costume suggestions and means you can still use some of Disney characters but you willget a broader range of costumes. Take a look at our cartoon costume suggestions but below is just few to get your brain cells working…

Superheros – most superheros have appeared in comic books and as a cartoon on the television
