Star Wars Costume battle – In a place far far away (well actually the Supreme Court London) an epic battle is reaching its climax. Prop maker Andrew Ainsworth, who created the original Star Wars Stormtrooper outfits from concept drawings, is fighting for his right to continue selling replicas of these iconic costumes. Opposing him is Head of the Star Wars galaxy, George Lucas, who contends that Ainsworth does not have the copyright on the outfits.
Lucas’ initial court case (2004) was successful but since then the decision has been appealed and reversed and now the matter has gone to the highest court in the UK. Although there are several aspects to this case, one of the key points is whether the costumes serve a ‘utilitarian purpose’ and are non-copyrightable props or whether they are works of art and therefore covered by the copyright laws. Given that Ainsworth’s trooper helmets have sold for £60,000 at auction and his replica outfits can cost up to £1500, we are not exactly talking cheap and cheerful here, but much hangs on the decision and the costuming universe waits with bated breath.
Props n Frocks supplies costumes to many television programmes, and today is no exception. If you were watch ITV’s ‘This Morning’ programme at 11.30 am you would have seen one of our Pantomime Cow costumes.
It started off looking very promising, ‘Demon Daisy’ as she was called was the 4/1 favourite & backed by Sean Ryder – couldn’t loose! However, after getting stuck on a plant pot and then losing the backend, poor ol’ Daisy actually limped in last!
Oh well, win some, loose some, it’s the taking part that matters! Never mind, we have plenty of other costumes making appearances on television shows, we’ll keep you informed.
Batman, AKA Neil Vaughn and Wonder Woman, also known as Sharon, got married yesterday in Paignton, Devon. Surrounded by family and friends, all in superhero costumes too, the couple tied the knot in full costume. The couple, who admit to not being particularly traditional, said that they just wanted to have a fun day with their family and friends.
A picture of the wedding appears on page 19 of The Sun newspaper today and shows that everyone really got into the spirit of things with guests dressed in a whole range of outfits including Captain America, Supergirl, The Incredibles and even the Incredible Hulk costumes.
Props n Frocks wishes the happy couple loads of luck in the future.
