Space Themed Fancy Dress

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Today’s fancy dress theme is ‘space’ as on the face of it, this is a good day for heavenly bodies. In 1781,Star Trek Costumes the first planet to be discovered by telescope, Uranus, was identified by Sir William Herschel and took its place as seventh planet from the Sun (obviously it had always been there, but you get the idea). On this date also in 1930 the Planet Pluto was located (although it wasn’t actually named until March 24th that year). It was designated the ninth planet of our solar system and being a cold and dark body on the system’s outer reaches, the name was apparently suggested by an 11 year old Oxford schoolgirl with an interest in mythology. (Pluto being the Roman God of the Underworld). It is also said the Walt Disney might have been inspired to name his (then) new cartoon dog after the planet.

Unfortunately it all started to go wrong for Pluto in 2006, when a reclassification of the term ‘planet’ caused it to be demoted to a new class of dwarf planet – Mickey Mouse was doubtless devastated.

Anyway today we thought we would declare a celebration of our Solar System with a Space-based event. We make the suggestions, all you have to do is planet!

Futuristic Fancy Dress Theme

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

We are suggesting a futuristc fancy dress theme today as on this date in 1866, the Aeronautical Silk Spectre - Watchmen Costumes Society of Great Britain (which later became the Royal Aeronautical Society) was founded. Although Man had taken to the skies in balloons, powered flight was still many years off, but this did not prevent the Society having over a hundred members within three years and mounting a major exhibition, at Crystal Palace, in 1868. Meanwhile, a hundred years later and in a different sphere of science, one Doctor James Bedford, who died of natural causes related to kidney cancer, became the first person to be cryogenically frozen, with a view to be revived at some time in the future. Our theme for the day is ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ in which you can indulge in everything, from futuristic space-wear to reviving those fashion trends that never really took off.

This fancy dress them could also inlcude old favourites including

  • Star Wars Costumes
  • Star Trek Costumes
  • The Matrix Costumes
  • Transformers
  • Spiderman Costumes and all the other Superhero costumes you can think of
  • Robots – some really great budget masks available
  • Avatar Costumes
