Today’s fancy dress theme is ‘space’ as on the face of it, this is a good day for heavenly bodies. In 1781,
the first planet to be discovered by telescope, Uranus, was identified by Sir William Herschel and took its place as seventh planet from the Sun (obviously it had always been there, but you get the idea). On this date also in 1930 the Planet Pluto was located (although it wasn’t actually named until March 24th that year). It was designated the ninth planet of our solar system and being a cold and dark body on the system’s outer reaches, the name was apparently suggested by an 11 year old Oxford schoolgirl with an interest in mythology. (Pluto being the Roman God of the Underworld). It is also said the Walt Disney might have been inspired to name his (then) new cartoon dog after the planet.
Unfortunately it all started to go wrong for Pluto in 2006, when a reclassification of the term ‘planet’ caused it to be demoted to a new class of dwarf planet – Mickey Mouse was doubtless devastated.
Anyway today we thought we would declare a celebration of our Solar System with a Space-based event. We make the suggestions, all you have to do is planet!
