Goodies & Baddies Fancy Dress

Given our mention of the Lone Ranger yesterday in our Western costume ideas blog,

Queen of Hearts Baddie Fancy Dress

Queen of Hearts Costume

someone has noted that in the current climate of anti-banker feeling, you could play it both ways at a Goodies/Baddies fancy dress Party – either go as the heroic cowboy or, with a little modification, go as the villainous ‘Lone Arranger’. Well, it’s a thought. The problem with creative punning concept costumes (we have now had two over the past few days) is that sometimes they are a little too clever for their own good: A costume should usually ‘speak for itself’ and be instantly recognisable, and if your outfit is over-creative (or obscure) you might have to spend some time explaining it to people. On the other hand, you might relish the prospect of showing off your ingenuity – even more so if it is the subtle touches that make the outfit special. So here is one for the female fashionista set – you get some killer heeled shoes, paint the soles red (‘Flame’ and ‘Show-stopper’ are apparently good shades), wear them with a rag-doll costume and voila – Looby Louboutin!

Goodies & Baddies Fancy Dress Theme

Talking of films (well we were with  yesterday’s fancy dress theme) today sees the generaDark Knight Fancy Dressl release of another much anticipated film ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.  In a world where he has been deemed a baddie, Batman returns to protect the city once again.  Batman is always a popular costume when it comes to dressing-up, particularly if there is a Goodies and Baddies or Heroes and Villains theme.  There are a number of costume variations on the Batman look, with many people often citing Del Boy and Rodney’s take on the caped crusader and his side-kick, from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ as one of their favourites.

Whether you are looking for the ‘stretch-knit’ style of costumes from the original TV series of the 1960s; the blue, grey and yellow look from the American animated series of recent years, (where Batman: the Brave and the Bold, teams up with other heroes to fight crime). Alternatively you might want to go with darker look of recent films, which includes the one released today. At Props & Frocks we find that the muscle chest variations on all these looks tend to be the most popular.

This ‘Dark Knight Rises’ also sees the return of Batman’s female nemesis ‘Catwoman’.  Given that compared to the males there are relatively fewer female costumes on the heroes and villains theme, this is one that is likely to attract attention.

Now this may be a famous film star (maybe you always wanted to be Marilyn Monroe?) Or it could even be a teacher from your school days. This is a brilliant costume theme that will give you plenty of scope for a huge variety of costumes.

Goodies & Baddies Fancy Dress

We thought we’d offer a Goodies & Baddies costume theme for today as it does tie into the lead up toGod Bad fancy dress ideas Christmas quite nicely. Only the good boys and girls get presents don’t they?

We have a large selection of Goodies & Baddies costume ideas – why not take a look?

Day 2 of the ‘early Christmas’ celebrated in some European countries because of it’s being St Nicholas’ Day today. For example, when we mentioned the arrival of St. Nicholas in Holland yesterday, we noted he was accompanied by his coloured assistant ‘Black Peter’ who supposedly deals with the children who haven’t been good. In the Czech Republic he arrives with a collection of angels and devils in tow, who have a similar purpose.  In fact we have noted that, in general, our continental cousins take this ‘whose been naughty and whose been nice’ thing to a whole new level:– In Germany there is ‘Knecht Ruprecht’, dressed in black rags with blackened face and unkempt black hair (in the Bavarian region he has fur and horns). In Austria, there is ‘Krampus’, covered in bells and dragging chains. In France, ‘Père Noel’ is sometimes helped by an ex-butcher called ‘Père Fouettard’ who is called ‘Houseckler’ in Luxembourg.

In all cases, the origins of these characters seem to be as ‘bogeymen’ contrasting with the nice old Father Christmas and intended to scare children into behaving themselves – they certainly put Sexy Santas and Perky Pixies in the shade and give a whole new meaning to the Nightmare before Christmas.

Today’s costume theme has been chosen for two reasons: On the one hand, today is the birthday of one of our more low-profile comedians – Tim Brooke-Taylor, who was born in 1940 and recently awarded an OBE. Although now most often found on radio panel shows such as ‘Just a Minute’and ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’, for many he will be forever associated with ‘The Goodies’ TV series in which he starred with Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie. The shows have recently been released on DVD so they can be enjoyed by a new generation. At the Baddie end of the scale, we can take our pick between James Cagney, born on this day in 1899, who, though best known for his gangster roles, did also show versatility by appearing in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’, and Punch. Actually the Punch in question is the satirical magazine of that name, first published today in 1841, but its mascot/logo was the villainous Mr Punch of seaside puppet-show fame whose behaviour was certainly not politically correct by today’s standards. Anyway, if the idea of the theme appeals, pop down and see us here at Props n Frocks – that’s the way to do it!
