Goodies & Baddies Fancy Dress

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

We thought we’d offer a Goodies & Baddies costume theme for today as it does tie into the lead up toGod Bad fancy dress ideas Christmas quite nicely. Only the good boys and girls get presents don’t they?

We have a large selection of Goodies & Baddies costume ideas – why not take a look?

Day 2 of the ‘early Christmas’ celebrated in some European countries because of it’s being St Nicholas’ Day today. For example, when we mentioned the arrival of St. Nicholas in Holland yesterday, we noted he was accompanied by his coloured assistant ‘Black Peter’ who supposedly deals with the children who haven’t been good. In the Czech Republic he arrives with a collection of angels and devils in tow, who have a similar purpose.  In fact we have noted that, in general, our continental cousins take this ‘whose been naughty and whose been nice’ thing to a whole new level:– In Germany there is ‘Knecht Ruprecht’, dressed in black rags with blackened face and unkempt black hair (in the Bavarian region he has fur and horns). In Austria, there is ‘Krampus’, covered in bells and dragging chains. In France, ‘Père Noel’ is sometimes helped by an ex-butcher called ‘Père Fouettard’ who is called ‘Houseckler’ in Luxembourg.

In all cases, the origins of these characters seem to be as ‘bogeymen’ contrasting with the nice old Father Christmas and intended to scare children into behaving themselves – they certainly put Sexy Santas and Perky Pixies in the shade and give a whole new meaning to the Nightmare before Christmas.

Today’s costume theme has been chosen for two reasons: On the one hand, today is the birthday of one of our more low-profile comedians – Tim Brooke-Taylor, who was born in 1940 and recently awarded an OBE. Although now most often found on radio panel shows such as ‘Just a Minute’and ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’, for many he will be forever associated with ‘The Goodies’ TV series in which he starred with Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie. The shows have recently been released on DVD so they can be enjoyed by a new generation. At the Baddie end of the scale, we can take our pick between James Cagney, born on this day in 1899, who, though best known for his gangster roles, did also show versatility by appearing in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’, and Punch. Actually the Punch in question is the satirical magazine of that name, first published today in 1841, but its mascot/logo was the villainous Mr Punch of seaside puppet-show fame whose behaviour was certainly not politically correct by today’s standards. Anyway, if the idea of the theme appeals, pop down and see us here at Props n Frocks – that’s the way to do it!
