Today, we are having a Grease themed fancy dress party as on this date in 1978 the film Grease premièred. Now just in case you are the only person who has not seen this film, it’s a sort of retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in an American High School of the 1950s. It stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the teenagers in love (slight suspension of credulity required here) and is one of the all-time enduring choices when it comes to a musicals or 1970’s fancy dress theme (despite being set in the 50’s). Aside from some very catchy tunes – always a favourite when it comes to karaoke – the costuming is fairly simple – Pink Lady ‘gang’ jackets and pedal-pushers for the girls and ‘T-Bird’ jackets and/or T-shirts with jeans for the boys – although there is a break-out moment where Sandy (Newton-John) throws off her goody-goody image and dons a slinky leather-style outfit and bouffant hair-do to win her man. So today, Grease is the word.
