From time to time here at Props and Frocks we get some interesting challenges and some of them involve devising costume ‘groups’ For example, for a Heroes and Villains party, what could we offer a group of females? This goes back to something that has been a longer term theme in these blogs – the lack of female role-models – and finding a group to work with is even harder. Of course about a year ago the film Sucker Punch offered a feisty female foursome but although costumes were produced, the film did not make much impact at the box office. Disney Princesses are always an option (the more recent ‘princesses’ have been less cutesy) or you could try a set of Disney villainesses (Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, Wicked Queen, etc). Depending upon how broad your interpretation of heroes/villains is, you could possibly even rope in some girl groups from other theme areas aside from movies and books, such as the Spice Girls – many might say villains guilty of the Spiceworld movie and their new musical project!

Other ladies group costume ideas include:

Glinda, Wicked Witch (of The West), Dorothy – Wizard of Oz Costumes (you can also now get ladies sexy costumes for The Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion)
Ladies Superhero costumes – Super Girl, Wonder Woman, Mrs Incredible, Silk Spectre, Bat Girl (female versions of Robin & Batman are also available)
Nuns
School Girls – always go around in groups!
Synchronized Swimmers – just all wear matching swimsuits, only if you are brave, and it is warm!

We offer 2 fancy dress theme options for today…

Most people are, quite rightly, celebrating the anniversary of the start of the Normandy D-Day landings today in 1944. Props & Frocks stocks a wide range of 40s hire costumes, and a growing range of 1940s uniforms to purchase, including a brilliant Dad’s Army costume.

However, never to be conventional, we go back a further hundred years to note that it was today in 1844 that the YMCA was founded inLondon. Unfortunately this worthy organisation and its initials are now more commonly associated with a disco floor-filler hit by the Village People, but we are sure the spin-off publicity/promotion hasn’t done any harm. For some, remembering the ‘professions’ portrayed by the members of the Village People can be a test akin to knowing the names of the Seven Dwarfs, but we still get requests for appropriate outfits from time to time, especially from ‘groups’ – if there are four, it’s Abba, if it’s five (or six), it’s the Village People, especially when it is a 1970s event.

Today, we focus on what we can offer in regards to group fancy dress ideas. We do get asked regularly what we have that would be suitable for groups of mixed sex, but also for all male and female groups. Today in 1802 the French writer Alexandre Dumas was born. Although he wrote a good number of novels, including ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’, he is possibly best known for ‘The Three Musketeers’. This book has been filmed many times and, amazingly, is seeing yet another remake, due for release early October and featuring Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich. Just in case you are the person who has never seen one of the movies or read the book, there are these three musketeers (not much of a plot spoiler there) Athos, Porthos and Aramis who are joined by a musketeer wannabee – D’Artagnan, and they get involved in a matter of intrigue and mystery, which threatens the very monarchy of France itself.

Meanwhile at Props n Frocks we find musketeer costumes can be a popular choice when it comes to generic or ‘group’ costume efforts – parties with a specific Musketeer theme are a little thin on the ground. Even so, rather like pirates, the outfit can work well for both males and females (but the ladies might want to skip the moustaches – or perhaps not!).
