Female Heroine Costume Ideas

Ladies Heroine Fancy Dress Ideas

Settle down – all might not be as it seems! Today we celebrate a couple of actresses who

have had their big breaks in films involving fantasy situations. Kim Cattrall (born 1956) is now best known for her role in ‘Sex and the City’ (although she has recently done stage-work in the UK, including playing Cleopatra). One of her first roles was as an Egyptian princess cursed to become a shop mannequin until she found true love and could come to life. The 1987 film ‘Mannequin’ isn’t that memorable (although Jefferson Starship’s ‘Nothing’s Going To Stop Us Now’, featured in the film’s credits, has stood the test of time) but the fantasy of inanimate objects coming to life, crops up regularly from ventriloquist dummies, to toy dolls such as Chucky, or the toys in Toy Story.

In a different field of fantasy, Carrie-Ann Moss (born 1967) is a Canadian actress seen in Christopher Nolan’s ‘back-to-front’ film ‘Memento’. She is possibly best known for her role as Trinity in the Matrix film trilogy. As most of you may know, ‘The Matrix’ of the film was an elaborate computer constructed reality from which one could only be ‘unplugged’ with difficulty and no little trauma (a similar effect can be observed with those losing a mobile, smartphone or ipod/pad). Take a look at our range of Matrix Costumes At a time when female action heroines seem to be in the ascent, we here at Props & Frocks can help you achieve your fantasy role – don’t dream it, be it!

Yesterday, we were mentioning one heroine from the Edwardian era and today we feature one of the heroes, Sherlock Holmes. Technically of course he did not exist, but was a creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. However, his ‘fame’ has been ‘recorded’ in book form, films and on television. A recent incarnation was being brought bang up-to-date by Benedict Cumberbatch, who celebrates his 36th birthday today.  Aside from the Sherlock Holmes role, he has also taken on the mantle of Stephen Hawking in the BBC drama ‘Hawking; and William Pitt in the film Amazing Grace. Later on this year he can also be heard as Smaug the Dragon and the Necromancer in Director, Peter Jackson’s long- anticipated prequel to Lord of the Rings; ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, which is  due to be released in December 2012.

This coming week, we are expecting an outbreak of Heroes and Villains parties, as the new Batman film ‘The Dark Knight’ goes on general release on July 15th. Although people may tend to focus on the superheroes of movies and comics when working with this theme, there are plenty of other costume opportunities, such as historical heroes and villains, goodies and baddies from the movies, or what about current celebrities? Some celebrities may not have any particular costume associated with them, but as we were mentioning at the start of the week, we do have some fantastic celebrity masks, and with the start of the Olympics now less than a fortnight away, many of these feature some of our great sporting heroes and heroines. Villains may be a bit more difficult to come by.

Goodies & Baddies Fancy Dress

Goodies & Baddies is today’s fancy dress theme. As a child did you like to dress-up and play Cops and Robbers or Cowboys and Indians?  If not, chances are youAdult Devil Fancy Dress are one of our growing number of readers who subscribe to the more modern take on these type of themes, that of Heroes and Villains or Goodies and Baddies.  The reason we were asking is because today, August 8th marks the day of the Great Train Robbery, way back in 1963. For those of you who were not born then, such as Tennis Star Roger Federer (who celebrates his 30th birthday today – born 1981) or were too young to remember it, this was possibly one of the most daring and audacious crimes in the UK. Probably one of the most well known of the Great Train Robbers was Ronnie Biggs, who escaped from Wandsworth prison in 1965 and then spent 30 years in exile.  He was also born on this day in 1929. So, whether you want to be a Goodie or a Baddie, a Hero or a Villain, have a chat with us at Props n Frocks.

We have covered this Go0die & Baddies costume theme a few times on these blogs, so we are not going to repeat the lists we have made on previous blogs, but we suggest you take a look here for some great Goodie & Baddie Costume ideas

Film Heroes & Heroines Fancy Dress Theme

Today’s fancy dress theme is Film Heroes & Heroines. As we mentioned a week or so ago, today marks the 30thZorro Fancy Dress Costume anniversary of the UK première of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, the film that introduced us to that iconic action archaeologist, Indiana Jones. The film was designed to recreate the spirit of the Saturday morning Matinee ‘cliffhanger’ cinema stories – the sort of thing also found in ‘Boy’s Own Paper’ and the Wizard comic. If all that sounds rather male-orientated, of course the girls later had their own role-model in Tomb Raider Lara Croft.

Heroes & Villains Fancy Dress Party

We often find people wanting to have Superhero, Heroes & Villains or Goodies and Baddies fancy dress parties in May. Take a look at some of these other Heroes & Villains blogs Wizard of Oz Outfits

One thing you may notice about many of the costumes available, particularly the superhero ones is that are all very similar. This is to do with licenses and copyright.  A few of the bigger names in the costume manufacturing world, will pay for a licence to produce costumes for a particular film, character, etc.. Often these can be for older films rather than newer ones, as many companies find it difficult to produce the costumes when the film is out in cinemas.

Most costumes for these types of parties, (particularly the Superheroes theme) tend to be character costumes, such as Batman, Robin, Superman, Spiderman, Supergirl, Lara Croft, etc.. However there are some generic costumes that will also fit the bill such as gangsters and molls, angels and devils, etc…

You do not need to be restricted to superhero costumes for this theme, why not also look at the following as it may give you some other great costume ideas…

  • Real Life Villains – Infamous criminal (Jack The Ripper) or a bog standard prisoner costume
  • Real Life Heroes – Mother Teresa, Doctors & Nurse, all the armed services
  • Film / Book Villains – Freddy Krueger, Wicked Witch Of The West
  • Film / Book Heroes – Indiana Jones, James Bond
  • Cartoon Heroes – Popeye
  • Fantasy Villains – Devils, Vampires, Witches
  • Fantasy Heroes – Fairy Godmother, Angels
  • Childhood hero, just who was your childhood hero? Maybe a teacher or a pop star?

Saints & Sinners Fancy Dress Party

Today our fancy dress theme is Saints & Sinners as it was on this day in 1907 Leslie Charteris was born.Wolfman Shirt

Who? Possibly not so well known (or widely read) as he used to be, Charteris created the book character ‘The Saint’. It was the TV adaptations of these books during the 1960s that arguably helped Roger Moore attract the stardom that would lead him to play James Bond. Although The Saint wasn’t a secret agent, he shared many similar characteristics with 007. Past experience has shown that declaring an excuse for a James Bond event is not always popular (even though we have produced our own in-house James Bond character information sheet) so how about ‘Saints and Sinners’ instead?

Saints and Sinners could also be called ‘Heroes & Villains’, ‘Goodies & Baddies’, ‘Good or Evil’, but these are all basically the same type of fancy dress party. We have some great Baddie Costume ideas on the blog, and also some hero costumes as well. another version of this theme would be ‘The Good, the Bad & The Ugly!’

One person’s idea of a sinner, is another’s Saint, so this costume theme is open to interpretation. All we would say is, be careful and do not offend anyone by dressing up in a costume that may not be politically correct (unless you are happy that the guests at the party will not mind).

Here are some of our ideas for Saint Costumes…

  • Dress up as a golfer, winner at St. Andrews
  • Father Christmas – St. Nicholas
  • Southampton (The Saints) Football player
  • Mother Teresa – nun outfit
  • Nurse Costumes – we have some great ladies sexy nurse outfits
  • Doctors – we stock a great range of accessories & costumes

  • Angels
  • Various Religions – we stock a great range of adult religious costumes

  • X Men
  • Neo & Trinity from The Matrix
  • Nelson

  • Armed Forces
  • Robin Hood

  • Snow Queen
  • Queen of Hearts
  • Count Dracula
  • Vampires
  • Werewolves
  • Wicked Witch of The West
