Why not have a Heroes & villains costume party? This is one fancy dress theme that just keeps on going, although it can also be called Goodies & Baddies or Saints & sinners, it basically is the same thing.
This is an interesting fancy dress theme as you have the option of looking at film or real life heroes. You could also look at your own personal ‘hero’. Now this may be a famous film star (maybe you always wanted to be Marilyn Monroe?) Or it could even be a teacher from your school days. This is a brilliant costume theme that will give you plenty of scope for a huge variety of costumes.
Well it’s George Lucas’ birthday today, but as we did ‘Star Wars’ ten days ago instead we celebrate the anniversary of ‘the other’ famous Australian actress – Cate Blanchett. Possibly best known for her portrayal of Galadriel, the fairy queen in ‘Lord of the Rings’ (she reprises the role in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’, part one of which is due for release in December 2012). Cate Blanchett has also portrayed a number of wartime heroines, has played Elizabeth the First of England twice, was the ‘baddie’ in the last Indiana Jones film and even turned up uncredited in Simon Pegg’s ‘Hot Fuzz’ film. She has also recently been seen on theWest Endstage. At a time when there are many other actresses constantly in the public eye, Miss Blanchett has built a good portfolio of strong but ‘unshowy’ roles, yet some of the parts she has played, can be potentially popular when it comes to something different for a Movies or Heroes & Villains party.
Following on from our 50s fancy dress theme yesterday, around this date in 1953, the Walt Disney version of Peter Pan was released. The original story was written by JM Barrie and the royalties over use and performance of the tale were assigned to the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Although the play is regularly performed as a ‘panto alternative’ around this time of year, it is the Disney version that most people recall, and of course we’ve also seen the tale’s famous fairy, Tinkerbell, building her part with a few spin-off movies in the last year or so.
When it comes to costuming, Peter Pan is a classic cross-dressing role, so that typically, a couple can go as Peter and his arch-enemy, Captain Hook, although ‘Tink’ impressions are also popular. That said, we’ve noticed a falling off in the popularity of Captain Hook in recent years (We know he’s a villain, but you get our gist) and some might assume that he has been replaced in our affections as ‘Most Popular Pirate’ by one Captain Jack Sparrow. Anyway, if we’re looking for a celebratory theme for today, it has to be Heroes and Villains.
We thought that a Hero & Villain costume theme was appropriate for today. It was on this day in 1843 that a major London landmark was completed when, after four years, Nelson’s column and statue, the centrepiece to Trafalgar Square was finally unveiled. Half the money for the monument (£50,000) had come from public subscription but not all the remarks about the statue were complementary – one commentator stated “It displayed a daring disregard for personal resemblance”. Given that tomorrow, of course, we celebrate the great plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament, we though Heroes and Villains was a good theme for today.
Now, we have covered this theme, under various guises, so follow this link for lots of fantastic Heroes & Villains costume ideas… (do scroll down as you will be given so many costume choices, you will really have more of a problem of deciding which idea to use)
Goodies & Baddies is today’s fancy dress theme. As a child did you like to dress-up and play Cops and Robbers or Cowboys and Indians? If not, chances are you are one of our growing number of readers who subscribe to the more modern take on these type of themes, that of Heroes and Villains or Goodies and Baddies. The reason we were asking is because today, August 8th marks the day of the Great Train Robbery, way back in 1963. For those of you who were not born then, such as Tennis Star Roger Federer (who celebrates his 30th birthday today – born 1981) or were too young to remember it, this was possibly one of the most daring and audacious crimes in the UK. Probably one of the most well known of the Great Train Robbers was Ronnie Biggs, who escaped from Wandsworth prison in 1965 and then spent 30 years in exile. He was also born on this day in 1929. So, whether you want to be a Goodie or a Baddie, a Hero or a Villain, have a chat with us at Props n Frocks.
We have covered this Go0die & Baddies costume theme a few times on these blogs, so we are not going to repeat the lists we have made on previous blogs, but we suggest you take a look here for some great Goodie & Baddie Costume ideas…
We often find people wanting to have Superhero, Heroes & Villains or Goodies and Baddies fancy dress parties in May. Take a look at some of these other Heroes & Villains blogs
One thing you may notice about many of the costumes available, particularly the superhero ones is that are all very similar. This is to do with licenses and copyright. A few of the bigger names in the costume manufacturing world, will pay for a licence to produce costumes for a particular film, character, etc.. Often these can be for older films rather than newer ones, as many companies find it difficult to produce the costumes when the film is out in cinemas.
Most costumes for these types of parties, (particularly the Superheroes theme) tend to be character costumes, such as Batman, Robin, Superman, Spiderman, Supergirl, Lara Croft, etc.. However there are some generic costumes that will also fit the bill such as gangsters and molls, angels and devils, etc…
You do not need to be restricted to superhero costumes for this theme, why not also look at the following as it may give you some other great costume ideas…
Real Life Villains – Infamous criminal (Jack The Ripper) or a bog standard prisoner costume
Real Life Heroes – Mother Teresa, Doctors & Nurse, all the armed services
Film / Book Villains – Freddy Krueger, Wicked Witch Of The West
Film / Book Heroes – Indiana Jones, James Bond
Cartoon Heroes – Popeye
Fantasy Villains – Devils, Vampires, Witches
Fantasy Heroes – Fairy Godmother, Angels
Childhood hero, just who was your childhood hero? Maybe a teacher or a pop star?
Today our fancy dress theme is Saints & Sinners as it was on this day in 1907 Leslie Charteris was born.
Who? Possibly not so well known (or widely read) as he used to be, Charteris created the book character ‘The Saint’. It was the TV adaptations of these books during the 1960s that arguably helped Roger Moore attract the stardom that would lead him to play James Bond. Although The Saint wasn’t a secret agent, he shared many similar characteristics with 007. Past experience has shown that declaring an excuse for a James Bond event is not always popular (even though we have produced our own in-house James Bond character information sheet) so how about ‘Saints and Sinners’ instead?
Saints and Sinners could also be called ‘Heroes & Villains’, ‘Goodies & Baddies’, ‘Good or Evil’, but these are all basically the same type of fancy dress party. We have some great Baddie Costume ideas on the blog, and also some hero costumes as well. another version of this theme would be ‘The Good, the Bad & The Ugly!’
One person’s idea of a sinner, is another’s Saint, so this costume theme is open to interpretation. All we would say is, be careful and do not offend anyone by dressing up in a costume that may not be politically correct (unless you are happy that the guests at the party will not mind).
Here are some of our ideas for Saint Costumes…
Dress up as a golfer, winner at St. Andrews
Father Christmas – St. Nicholas
Southampton (The Saints) Football player
Mother Teresa – nun outfit
Nurse Costumes – we have some great ladies sexy nurse outfits
Doctors – we stock a great range of accessories & costumes
Now today, March 21st we could suggest a Heroes and Villains fancy dress theme as both Timothy Dalton and GaryOldman were born on March 21st, in 1946 & 1958 respectively. Timothy Dalton’s best known heroic role is probably as James Bond in the films A View to a Kill and The Living Daylights. Although Gary Oldman may have gravitated more to the villainous side, with his performance as Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film and Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in the Fifth Element, his recent roles as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films and commissioner Gordon in Batman films The Dark Knight and the forthcoming Dark Night Rises (due 2012) may redress the balance. Whatever your take on Heroes and Villains, you can be sure at Props N Frocks we have something for everyone, whether you want to stay in the light or head over to the dark side.
Now, in some of our other hubs, we have given you a huge range of hero and villain costumes to choose from take a look at some of them here…
