Holiday Costume Souvenirs

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

Yesterday we mentioned considerations needed when taking costume items abroad, and although it may not be quite so Fancy Dress Sombrero relevant to us as hirers and retailers, we got to thinking about what people might try to bring back from their foreign costume-orientated break. Obviously many of the rules and regulations on luggage, hand baggage and ‘permissible items’ have changed (and may continue to do so) in the wake of ‘9/11’, but even then there may be other considerations. A few years ago, one of our colleagues in the costume trade was forced to ‘downsize’ on souvenirs, from an American costume convention visit, when they would not fit in his suitcase. He could have tried passing them off as hand-luggage, but thought people might be worried by someone carrying a large pair of angel wings onto the plane!

But how many times have you seen someone back at the airport in an oversized sombrero? I know, I personally have seen this many times, and often wonder at what point do you say WHY DID I BUY THIS????? It always seems a good idea at the time! So what happens to these items, purchased on impulse in some far away market? Well, often we have people coming into the fancy dress shop saying do you want this, it is just in our way, and we have never used it.

Saying that if you ever go to a Holiday Fancy Dress party, it does give you a chance to wear an ‘authentic’ souvenir. For more great holiday costume ideas, check out this blog

Fancy Dress & Holidays

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

With Christmas and New Year over, television advertising (& hence customers) tend to turn their minds towards theirHen Night Accessories holidays. It has been said by owners of costume firms that their costumes sometimes get better holidays than they do. Certainly those travelling to locations where costumes might be required – Carnival in Venice (you must look at our huge range of masquerade eye-masks), Mardi Gras in Rio – might choose to take something with them, rather than try hiring ‘on location’, for reasons of cost or simplicity.  some cruise companies hold a fancy dress themed night as well nowadays. With Hens & Stags often choosing a theme for their celebrations, and often extending the traditional ‘last night of freedom’ to a weekend, and in some case, even a week away, taking a costume, or accessory with you just is not that uncommon any more. Why not have a look at our range of Hen & Stag  Night Novelties

Things to consider before you choose your costume, or accessory, to take away with you:

  • How much room will it take up in your luggage? You do need some space for your own clothing!
  • Is there anything that could break, or get damaged by rough handlers? It may be better to keep it in hand luggage, and this will restrict what size costume you can realistically take with you
  • Are you likely to lose, or damage it? If you answer yes to this question, then you really should consider purchasing your item, rather than hire

Obviously, what can be taken may be restricted by airline baggage allowances (there are sometimes advantages with travel by coach or train), although technically we suppose there is nothing (aside from ‘security restrictions’ and some potentially funny looks) to stop you from wearing your outfit on the plane! Perhaps you might choose to take some ‘core items’ and improvise the rest from local sources. Whatever you decide, if you are hiring items from us, make sure your travel insurance covers these additional non-standard holiday items, as your security deposit may not cover their replacement cost.

Holiday Fancy Dress Theme

Monday, July 25th, 2011

We thought we’d have a Holiday Fancy Dress theme today as it’s almost August (traditionally holiday time) – thought you might like aTourist Fancy Dress week’s warning as these things can creep up on you – and with holidays on our mind, we’re talking about channel hopping.

As the world becomes smaller, the actual range of holidays that people go on has grown considerably. From walking in the fells to scuba diving in the Red Sea, or looking after rescue elephants in Thailand, this is a great fancy dress theme. You could choose to wear your fantasy holiday outfit (whatever that may me), or re-live a past expedition, it is really up to you.

Here are just some of our great Holiday costume Ideas…

  • Basic swimwear – an easy choice (if the weather is nice enough!)
  • Scuba Diving
  • African Safari
  • Tourist, have you seen our brilliant Tacky tourist costume
  • Hawaiian costumes
  • Ice Cream Costume
  • Christmas Costumes (we call that the holidays)
  • Back Packer
  • Disney Characters
  • Ancient Egyptians | Romans
  • Various country costumes – this gives you a huge choice of potential country costumes to choose from
  • Airline Pilot
  • Air Steward / ess
  • Ship’s Captain or dress up in formal attire for a ‘formal’ night

Why not let us some of your own costume ideas for this theme?

Although, it is nearly august, it wasn’t the only reason why we have choosen ‘Holidays’ as our costume theme today…

Today in 1909 Louis Bleriot was the first person to fly a heavier-than-air machine across the English Channel. He took 35 minutes to do it and won a prize of £1000. Fifty years later in 1959, a prototype hovercraft, the SRN1, made a channel crossing in two hours and nowadays with airport check-in times and security checks it can take even longer. Such is progress. Still, there are other places to go than France, and sometimes quite cheaply –if the Dartford Crossing tolls rise at Christmas as expected, it will be cheaper to fly to Madrid then to commute across the Thames for a week – we certainly know which we would choose.

Talking of holidays, this might be a timely reminder to mention that whilst we have no problem with you taking samples of our hire costumes with you – sometimes our costumes get better holidays than we do – the safety of the outfits is down to you so regardless of security deposits, check your holiday insurance coverage. We know the quality of our outfits is priceless but we would not want you to discover that the hard way.
