International Men’s Day is our costume theme today as it is celebrated in several countries around the World.
The original idea of the day, inaugurated in 1999 was to redress the balance when it came to matters of men’s health and gender discrimination. Last year we said that we weren’t too sure how Men were supposed to celebrate (or participate) in the Day, but being a Saturday and, for many, a non-work day, we feel that most will find a way (or an excuse).
That said, on the costuming front, we have noticed a gradually increasing adventurous trend when it comes to males choosing their outfits: Leaving aside those who, possibly quite rightly (as we do know that women know best!) defer to their partner’s choice and then ‘fit in’ with something to complement it, given a free choice the lads seem to be more open to trying some of the more unusual costumes on offer. The morphsuits, which proved particularly popular for males during the Halloween period, is one type of costume which effectively disguises the identity of the wearer completely, whether they are male or female.
So today, it’s all about the men. Any male costume would be suitable, or maybe you could wear a false moustache, or beard, something that ties in quite nicely with Movember (which if you missed our earlier post is all about raising money for male cancers by growing, or in our case, purchasing a fancy dress moustache during the month of November). Or, maybe you want to dress up as a fictional male hero, whatever your choice, for one day only, the men are allowed to get their own way!
