Well, as we were mentioning earlier this month, steam buffs in London will be chuffed this coming weekend: As part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, there‘s a plan to recreate the early days of the Metropolitan line by running steam-trains on the tube lines between Moorgate and Olympia or Earl’s Court on Sunday January 13th & Sunday January 20th. Not quite as tricky as it sounds as sections of the line are ‘open’, and there’s an electric loco to help where steam/smoke could be a problem. Unfortunately, unless you’ve already bought into this event (tickets went on sale pre-Christmas for two weeks), you won’t get much of a look in – even platform tickets are restricted to avoid potential overcrowding. Nonetheless, there are some special stamps on sale and there’s bound to be plenty of media coverage. In the meantime, you can hold your own celebratory event, helped by our ‘London Underground Party’ information section elsewhere on  this site.

Props & Frocks is closed today & tomorrow

After a manic time over Christmas & New Year we thought we’d take a couple more days off to recover. We are still taking, and shipping, online orders, it is just the shop that remains closed until Friday.

And we are back after the New Year celebrations. We could say ‘So far, so far good’, but let’s not tempt fate.

In the meantime, what can we offer of interest in the forthcoming month? Well, London Underground (we have some great London Underground costume ideas) and Jane Austen both have anniversaries coming up in January (150th of The Tube mid-month and 200th of first publication of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ on January 28th) and, of course, we have the regular annual high-spot of Scottish culture and food and drink on January 25th with Burns’ Night (we also have some great Scottish costume ideas if you want to do something a little different). As always, we will continue to keep you up-to-date with other potential causes for celebration, relating them to themes and relevant costuming ideas as appropriate and hope we can continue to keep you informed and entertained during 2013.

Tudor Man – Ideal for Stratford

this a base for a brilliant fancy dress theme?

Although this costume theme may seem a little daunting at first, we can offer you a huge range of potential London Underground costume ideas to make choosing your costume very easy. so whether you are looking to do something very simple (Beehive wig for High Barnet) or more involved (Wombles for Wimbledon), we have the tube costume for you.

Mid-week and we note that today many people are celebrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day – don’t say we never tell you anything! Historically, GIS is what we used to call a map, but of course with the developments of technology (which we seem to be spending a little time celebrating this week), the field covers a very much wider area nowadays (in more ways than one). It also involves much more exciting things like being able to check what your cat does at night, thanks to its GPS collar, and find out if people are actually ‘on the train’ or sitting in the station buffet.

And how can we celebrate this day through the medium of costume? (We have to say that, looking at the map of GIS events, only London and Plymouth seem to be doing anything for it here in the South of England). It’s a long time since we suggested the concept of a Scavanger Hunt, where teams are set tasks to achieve on a given route or area, whilst also collecting various every-day and/or unusual items. Although, in these fuel-conscious days, the car-based ones are less common, ones on foot and, of course, in fancy dress, can be a great fundraising idea, especially as you might be looking for something to do for Children in Need, coming up at the end of this week.

Today in 1907 the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR) opened as an underground railway. Later in the 1920s, this line was connected to the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) but because the initials were getting a little out of hand, it later became known as a major part of what we now know as the Northern Line. Here in Essex, with Ongar as an outpost of the Tube network, we occasionally get the ‘Come Dressed as the Name of a Tube Station Theme’ crop up. For some it is not too much of a problem – Angel and Blackfriars are no-brainers, but after that you might have to start thinking creatively. This is one situation where a theme’s outfits – ‘Tube Station Costumes’ – don’t come off-the-peg on the Internet (although there are a few chat rooms with suggestions). You therefore might need to come to somewhere like ourselves for help (or at least consult our specialist information sheet on this very topic, to be found elsewhere on this site).

Today we are having a London Underground Stations Costume partyLondon Underground Station Costume Ideas

Now if you ever get asked to this type of fancy dress party, do not despair as Props n Frocks have a page full of great London Underground Costume ideas and how to do them. Today we are going Underground as we celebrate a small piece of transport history. The world’s first underground tube railway opened in London in 1870, close to where Tower Bridge now stands. It was not the first underground railway, but the Tower Tunnel under the Thames that the railway used was built using cast-iron circular tube sections.  Unfortunately the carriage that transported people through the tunnel proved slow and the tunnel was later converted to pedestrian use (for a fee). It proved a popular crossing-point until Tower Bridge (which was free to use) opened in 1894 when it fell into disuse. This ‘tube’ still exists but now carries water-pipes and telecoms and has no part in the London Underground Tube network of nowadays.

Needless to say, today’s the day to dust off our ever so helpful guide to costuming for an Underground Stations event!

Olympic Themed Fancy Dress Party

Olympics is the costume theme of the day as we could not get to the end of July without mentioning what will beRed, White Blue Bunting taking place this time next year. The official opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games is scheduled for Friday July 27th.

The games themselves will be on until August 12th, with the Paralympic Games from August 29th-September 9th.  This is when the eyes of the world will be on London and here in Essex we will of course be watching. Earlier in the month on July 5th and 6th the Olympic flame will be visiting local towns Ipswich and Chelmsford, moving onto Cambridge on the 7th, Luton in Bedfordshire on the 8th, Oxford on the 9th and Reading in Berkshire on the 10th.

For those who did not get tickets, why not think about getting together with friends and neighbours and having your own Olympic opening ceremony event? There are likely to be several big screens set up in pubs, clubs and sporting venues throughout the country and if you need help with decorations and accessories you know where to come.

What about dressing up too?  You could get your guests to dress up as an actual country and you could even have games throughout the evening, with medal ceremonies as you go! Or maybe have London as your costume theme – you could even have a London Underground Fancy dress party – do not despair, we’ve loads of great Underground costume ideas here.
