Today, we are ‘Looking To The Future’ with our fancy dress theme as in 1949 on this date George Orwell published his novel of a supposed dystopian bleak future ‘1984’ and in doing so, introduced the concept of ‘Big Brother’. The book’s title date

supposedly came about because Orwell reversed the last two digits of 1948, its date of completion but from the book’s opening line ‘It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen’ we can tell that the technology was not all it could be, although the surveillance facilities, so vital to the plot, all seemed in perfect working order throughout (unlike the realities of the current day). So today we thought we would declare a Future Perfect/Imperfect theme: Will you take the Utopian view of a bright shining future with everyone in stylish space-wear and future fashion or the Dystopian future as epitomised in ‘1984’, ‘Blade Runner’ and Terry Gilliam’s ‘Brazil’?

So this costume theme is really wide open, and it is whether you think the future will be good, or bad? So you could wear one of our fabulous sci-fi style costumes, or use your imagination and put together an alien costume (think of Avatar). Or, maybe you think we’ll all be wearing Morphsuits (see image).

It is also a chance for you to adapt some old clothing, get some weird hairstyle (a wig may be best) and develop your own style. If you want to follow in George Orwell’s footsteps, you could always wear an animal costume and chat away all night.
