After our German excursion a couple of days ago, there is great excitement in other centres of celebration of Carnival around the world today as we’re on the final weekend before Mardi Gras (and the subsequent sobriety of Lent). Whilst in this country it is usually just down to making sure you have got the eggs, flour and milk ready for pancake-making, others are busy with more fantastical pursuits. We know some centres around the country that are going for pancake tossing in fancy dress in a big way, and our novelty and superhero costumes prove a great attraction. This year, why not think about going totally incognito, with out superb range of morphsuits? Following on from yesterday’s blog, which highlighted our September’s winning image competition Morphsuit costumes, we thought we’d let you know that Morphsuits are now available in kids sizes. Our range of morphsuits have proved extremely popular, especially over the Halloween period and we had so many tweens asking us for a Morphsuit in their size. The good news for the Small Set is that there is now the prospect of morphsuits for children. As we have noted before, children’s costumes generally have to meet higher standards of manufacture and safety than those for adults (this is why there are not many zips and dangerous ‘notions’ (e.g. feathers) to be found on outfits for youngsters) but apparently these suits meet all the right criteria and will be on the market in the near future.
Last Monday we were talking about what will be the ‘big thing’ for Halloween. One of the frontrunners for this year’s title could be Halloween morphsuits – so-called because they resemble the look of the Tony Hart creation Morph. If you have not heard of these where have you been? The morphsuit concept has been sweeping the country and as with many ingenious ideas, there are always those who will copy the look. Earlier this year, we attended a trade show where morph or skin suits could be seen on virtually every costume stand and we have to say in various degrees of quality. At props n frocks we want to give our customers the best deal, but we also recognise that sometimes you have to pay that little bit extra for the appropriate quality. The concept of the morphsuit is to achieve a totally anonymous persona and we believe that the fantastic selection of Halloween morphsuits available will go down a storm at any Halloween event.

Tuesday September 20th and it’s time to talk polymers because it was upon this day in 1935 that the artificial material Nylon was patented. Created by a team led by the chemist Wallace Carothers working at the DuPont Company and hailed by Fortune Magazine as only ‘the fourth major development in textiles in their four thousand year history’, the new material was initially used for toothbrushes and fishing lines. Then the company started making stockings from the fibre and its success was assured. A little known fact is that nylon also played a role in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ film, helping create the tornado screen effect that takes Dorothy from Kansas to Oz.
Of course nylon stockings have now been somewhat superseded (unless of course you were going for the authentic look at last weekend’s Goodwood Revival), but DuPont product is still a part of our lives in the form of Spandex (an anagram of ‘Expands’), better known in this country as lycra. Not everyone necessarily thinks they look good in lycra, but certainly the popularity of the new morphsuit trend shows there is still room for some novel stretches of the imagination.

The choice of Male Halloween outfits has increased tremendously over the last couple of years and we are able to offer a huge range of costumes for every budget. But, we know that not everyone likes the thought of dressing up. so how about this for a cheap costume option? Take an old shirt (be aware, it will stain, so make sure it is not going to be used again) and flick some fake blood on to it. Put some fake blood on your palms and then wipe your hands down the side of the shirt, just as you would to wipe your hands clean. You can add a bloody weapon if you want, but it does give you a cheap, yet very effective Halloween costume.
Today may be the 65th birthdays of two greats of the movie world, actor Tommy Lee Jones (born in San Saba Texas, 1946), and director, (William) Oliver Stone (born in New York City), but when it comes to dressing up there is not a great potential. Although, Tommy Lee Jones won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in ‘The Fugitive’, plus an Oscar nomination in JFK (which co-incidentally was one of Oliver Stone’s controversial films), Agent K in the 1997 cult classic Men in Black (and its 2002 sequel) is probably his most well known role, but as with many of his films he tends to be dressed in a suit.
Oliver Stone has directed a number of films, many of them politically based. ‘Platoon’, starring Wilem Dafoe, and ‘Born on the 4th of July’, starring Tom Cruise, both won Oscars, but for today’s topical theme we thought we would take the title of one of his lesser known films (about the Vietnam war), ‘Heaven and Earth’, which also happened to have Tommy Lee Jones in a leading role.
