Gilbert & Sullivan Fancy Dress Theme

Sunday, May 13th, 2012

We seem to have had a bit of a musical fancy dress theme running through our blogs this Pirate Fancy Dress Accessoriesweek, so today we thought we would go a bit more high-brow (well we did say a bit) and celebrate the fact that 170 years ago today the composer Sir Arthur Sullivan was born. The musical half of the Gilbert & Sullivan partnership which enjoyed great success with the various light operettas produced by the D’Oyly Carte Company, he was also a noted musician in his own right: In his later years he created a ballet ‘Victoria and Merrie England’ for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, amongst other works – perhaps someone will ‘revisit’ it for the Queen’s jubilee this year.

Gilbert & Sullivan costuming tends to be a bit of a niche market, especially as there are specialist firms who offer integrated packages of costumes for G&S and other musical-based productions ‘off-the-peg’. That said, the themes covered by the G & S works cover a number of bases from countries such as Japan (‘The Mikado’) and Italy (‘The Gondoliers’) to Nautical choices such as ‘Pirates of Penzance’ and ‘HMS Pinafore’, the characters offer opportunities for some colourful costuming.

Some Gilbert & Sullivan Costume Ideas:

  • Victorian Gentleman, one blond, one dark, both moustached
  • The Mikado – Japanese Costume
  • Pirates of Penzance – Pirate Costumes
  • HMS Pinafore – Victorian Costumes & Sailor outfits
  • Iolanthe – Fairy costumes
  • The Gondoliers

A Night at The Opera Costume Theme

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Today we encourage you to have A Night at The Opera as your fancy dress theme as it was on thisPhantom Of The Opera Eyemask day in 1732, the Royal Opera House opened in Covent Garden, London. As a cultural art-form, Opera has a somewhat highbrow image, but in recent years there have been attempts to change the elitist image and make opera a more mainstream entertainment. Of course much depends upon your definition of the term opera as there have been variations on the theme, such as the light operas of Mozart, the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan and even the rock operas of The Who!  If you are looking for a potentially different theme for the festive season, why not try Operatic Characters? Again, it is open to interpretation, but at least there are plenty of costuming opportunities and the theme is open to ingenuity, such as the Marx Brothers from ‘A Night at the Opera’.

Some of our Opera themed costume ideas include:

Yesterday we mentioned Wagner’s Ring Cycle operas and today we find another opera connection, albeit a literary one. It was on this day in 1909 that Gaston Leroux revealed the character who would later become of such benefit, to the fortunes of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber & Co.. The French magazine ‘Le Gaulois’ started a serialisation of a story about a disfigured musician who haunted the Opera House in Paris. Initially the story of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, later published as a book, was received poorly, but subsequent translations and adaptations have ensured the Phantom’s success as a major anti-hero.

So today is also a day for celebrations of antiheroes and underdogs (which is another possible costume theme for today)– the Phantom, Quasimodo, Edward Scissorhands, etc. As always, there are not too many female equivalents (which might be regarded as a good thing), so manufacturers are ‘helping out’ with female versions of these males – look out for Miss Scissorhands and, with Halloween on the horizon, Miss F(reda?) Krueger and Miss Chucky!
