Space Themed Fancy Dress Party

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Today we are looking into space with our fancy dress theme. Check out these blog posts for some greatSpace Costumes Space Costume ideas

Given that today is Easter Sunday, costume partying may be the last thing on your minds. However on this date in 1990, the Hubble Telescope was launched from the space shuttle Discovery and, after a few hiccups in which its ‘eyesight’ had to be fixed due to a problem with its mirrors and lenses, the telescope has since enabled us to marvel at the wonders of the far distant parts of the Universe. Very awe-inspiring and conducive to feelings of insignificance! Traditionally the Easter holiday marks the start of the ‘Summer season’ of outdoor activities (although a few theme parks seemed to have jumped the gun because the festival is late this year) so here’s hoping for a good few months when we can all get out and celebrate the amazing diversity of our environment.

Why not broaden your theme to include Science Fiction Costumes

Sci Fi Fancy Dress

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Sci Fi is our main fancy dress theme, but read on as we have another idea for a Relatives costume Science Fiction Costumestheme as well…

March 20th 1916 and Albert Einstein (who co-incidentally was born this week in 1879 – March 14th to be precise) publishes his General Theory of Relativity: the curvature of space-time is directly related to the momentum and mass-energy of whatever matter and radiation are present. Quite. So in honour of this breakthrough in scientific thought, we can either suggest a Sci-Fi event featuring such well known exponents as Dr Frankenstein, Frank-n-Furter, Dr Who and a (heavenly) host of our favourite space characters from Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. or we can go off at a tangent, think outside the envelope and work with famous ‘Relatives’ – Aunt Sally, Uncle Fester, Baby Stewie, Red Riding Hood’s Granny, the nuns of Sister Act, need we go father? Or you can combine the two in the best traditions of scientific experimentation.

Take a look at our range of sci-fi costumes – they are out of this world!

Yes, on February 14th 2010, the record for the greatest number of Star Trek characters ever assembled in one place was achieved.

Futuristic Fancy Dress Theme

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

We are suggesting a futuristc fancy dress theme today as on this date in 1866, the Aeronautical Silk Spectre - Watchmen Costumes Society of Great Britain (which later became the Royal Aeronautical Society) was founded. Although Man had taken to the skies in balloons, powered flight was still many years off, but this did not prevent the Society having over a hundred members within three years and mounting a major exhibition, at Crystal Palace, in 1868. Meanwhile, a hundred years later and in a different sphere of science, one Doctor James Bedford, who died of natural causes related to kidney cancer, became the first person to be cryogenically frozen, with a view to be revived at some time in the future. Our theme for the day is ‘The Shape of Things to Come’ in which you can indulge in everything, from futuristic space-wear to reviving those fashion trends that never really took off.

This fancy dress them could also inlcude old favourites including

  • Star Wars Costumes
  • Star Trek Costumes
  • The Matrix Costumes
  • Transformers
  • Spiderman Costumes and all the other Superhero costumes you can think of
  • Robots – some really great budget masks available
  • Avatar Costumes

Sci-fi Fancy Dress Theme

Today, we are suggesting a Sci-Fi fancy dress theme.Star Trek Costumes

Great news for fans of science-fiction, and most especially Star Trek, as the planet Vulcan was ‘discovered’ on this day in 1860. A French mathematician, seeking to explain the orbital behaviour of the planet Mercury, concluded that it was due to a yet undiscovered planet between Mercury and the Sun, which he called Vulcan after the Roman god of fire. Unfortunately, in the event no such planet was discovered and Albert Einstein stated that Mercury’s behaviour was an effect of his theory of Relativity. Despite the fact that Mr Spock was subsequently re-homed in a galaxy some distance away, space and sci-fi fans can still celebrate with two other related facts. Today in 1839 the first detailed pictures of the Moon were taken, and on this day in 1920, the legendary sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov (the one who invented the Three Laws of Robotics) was born. The beauty about the future is that it is all down to people’s imaginations, so if you are looking for wild and wacky futuristic fashions and accessories, you know where to come. We have a great range of sci-fi costumes that you can look ‘out of this world’ in!
