As it is the anniversary of the FA cup today, we thought we’d promote a ‘sporting’ fancy dress theme.
Watching the TV there are so many football tournaments and matches on every week that it’s a wonder the footballers have any time to spend the vast amount of money they earn (perhaps that’s where the WAGs come in). Anyway, today we celebrate the anniversary of the oldest football tournament in the world, the FA Cup, which was won for the first time by Wanderers FC against Royal Engineers AFC 1-0 at The Oval, Kennington, London in 1872. Although there had been football matches and prizes before, game rules tended to vary from club to club, region to region and even match to match. The FA was founded to help regulate the game and the Wanderers succeeded in winning the cup in three consecutive years, a feat achieved only once since then (by Blackburn Rovers. since you ask).
Anyway, with all the fun and frolics of Red Nose Day coming to a climax this week, doubtless a few football matches (and other sporting events) of varying degrees of seriousness will be played in a good cause, and should your thoughts be turned to a fancy-dress event, you know where to Wander down to.
Obviously, if you can mix your fancy dress party with raising money for good causes then well done to you, but a lot of you will just have a costume party for your own fun, and where is the harm in that? Rather than restrict today theme to pure football (rather limiting we thought), we have expanded it to include all sport.
Some Sport costume suggestions from Props n Frocks:
Racing Driver
Football / rugby player – fairly easy to put together at home
Matador – okay, not very popular in this country – ladies versions available
Today we give you ‘Fun & Games’ as our fancy dress suggestion.
Next year of course the Olympics are due to be held in the UK. So, today we celebrate great sporting achievements, as according to the Roman Catholic calendar it is St Sebastian’s day, who is the Patron Saint of Athletes. Given that this day in 1892, the very first official basketball game was played, the theme can be expanded upon, not only to reflect sports, but also Fun and Games. Those who have their own sports kit, might decide this is the easy option. But if you want to be more creative, why not consider looking at the theme from a different angle?
Characters from Cluedo, playing cards (Ace of Spades, Queen or King of Hearts, etc.), chess pieces (e.g. knight, bishop, queen, king), Trivial Pursuit categories, computer games (Mario Brothers, Lara Croft, Sonic The Hedgehog), Dungeons and dragons, war games, etc., are just some of the many avenues to explore with this theme.
Think about about other famous board games like Monopoly, you could even dress up in a convict costume and say you are in jail. All you need is a little bit of lateral thinking.
Think about what other countries class as a sport, for example, bull fighting in Spain and Rodeo in America. See some other possible costume examples below:
If you have been to a fancy dress party with this theme, why not drop us a line and let us know what you went as. It really does help others with their own costume ideas.
We have decided on having today’s fancy dress theme based on sport. There are a few reasons for this…
Ladies Sexy Referee Fancy Dress
On October 24th in 1857 the first official club still playing Association football Sheffield Football Club, was founded. It all started a couple of years earlier when the members of a cricket club got a little bored out of season and started to organise informal ‘kick-abouts’. Initially things were a little improvisational – the first club headquarters was a greenhouse. The club made up its own rules of play, which was not unusual as there was no recognised central governing body at the time and so wherever football was played, including schools, there were local variations – this made playing out-of-area away matches especially interesting: At Rugby School, of course they came up with a football variation involving the ball being handled by the players, which gave rise to a whole new branch of sport, but we digress. Given that this date also saw the founding of the United Nations in 1945, we thought we would push the thematic envelope and go for ‘Sports of The World and Their Supporters’ as a suggestion today – quite apart from the fact that we have recently had a World Cup and a Commonwealth Games ongoing, it can be interesting to find out what countries have as their national sports – Table Tennis in China, Volleyball in Sri Lanka and, of course, martial arts in the Orient.
So in the world of Props n Frocks fancy dress what costumes do we have in stock that would be suitable for this costume theme. Well, for all of you who really do not fancy dressing up at all (yes, there are some people out there who hate fancy dress!), how about just wearing your favourite’s team top, this can be a football, or rugby top and you probably already have that in your wardrobe. You need to use your imagination, a volley ball uniform, especially beach volley ball, should be fairly easy to put together, but for those of you who do enjoy the whole thing about dressing up in costume, take a look at the following costumes to give you some ideas:
