Storybook Characters Fancy Dress Theme

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Storybook, is today’s fancy dress suggestion, although you may have though, we would have used Musicals as it’s the thirtieth anniversary of the stage show ‘Cats’ today. Opening at the Gone With The Wind Costume New London Theatre on this date in 1981 the concept of a musical set around a refuse-tip with a cast of human cats was something of a novelty. Originally Judi Dench was to star in the production but she damaged her tendon days before the launch and her part of Grizabella was given to Elaine Paige, who was also given the big ‘Memory’ number to sing. Like most Lloyd Webber musicals, the show was a great success and it spawned many international versions.

Now the obvious theme for today would be Cats. However not everyone is necessarily enamoured of our feline friends, so we could use the fact that the first known book was printed in China around this date in 868 to broaden the theme to Storybook so people can pick and choose their costume character. Oh, and if you have a particular thing for black cat costumes, keep it handy for later this week – Friday 13th.

We have covered costume ideas for a storybook theme quite a few times on this blog, these blogs really concentrate on childrens’ book character ideas but they should give you lots of costume ideas, or at least some inspiration. We do find that the more traditional characters are the most popular for this theme, otherwise, you will be explaining who you have come dressed up as all night long, which may get a bit irritating!

Storybook Characters Fancy Dress Theme

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Today we’re suggesting Storybook Characters as a fancy dress theme because Roger Hargreaves, creator of the Mister Men and Little Misses died on the 11th September in 1988. The books continue to be popular with children (and adults) of all ages, their popularity of course being enhanced by the TV series narrated by Arthur Lowe (late of ‘Dad’s Army). There are a wide range of Mr Men and Little Misses characters to give you ideas (or you could invent your own) – there are even some official costumes available, but they tend to be in child sizes. Why should the kids have all the fun? We stock a huge range of Storybook Characters from a Scarlett O’Hara Costume to Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, or what about a character from The Twilight Saga – Props n Frocks stocks a huge range of werewolf costumes and accessories and brilliant vampire fangs.

Fay Wray, the co-star to King Kong, a gorilla who was big in the 30s (and continued to be so in the 1976 and 2005 remakes), was born this day in 1904. So, if you don’t fancy a storybook characters costume theme, how about ‘stars of the silver screen’ as an alternative costume theme.
