With just over a week to go to Halloween, & following our recent discussion about Skull-
orientated Halloween outfits yesterday, we thought we’d take time to help those looking for something different to do next weekend whilst remaining within the Halloween spirit. What about ‘Día de los Muertos’ or ‘The Day of the Dead’?
Another way of looking at this costume theme is dressing up as anyone who is dead. The easiest way to do this would be to dress up as a famous dead person. Here are some of our Day Of The Dead Fancy Dress Costume Ideas:
- Marilyn Monroe
- Michael Jackson
- Zombies – there is now so much choice for a zombie costume
- Vampires
- Elvis Presley
- Amy Whinehouse
- Audrey Hepburn
- Buddy Holly
- Henry VIII
- Anne Boleyn
- Elizabeth Taylor
- Julius Caesar – wear one of our Roman costumes
- Nelson
- Freddy Mercury
This festival, celebrated in Mexico and many Spanish-speaking countries, virtually coincides with the Halloween festival in that it usually occurs on November 1st– what we know as All Hallows (or Saints) Day – sometimes continuing onto the 2nd. The celebrations are thought to have their roots in Aztec times, and on the Day, the souls of the Dearly Departed are honoured, with shrines being created and special food and decorations being prepared. One of these decorations is the Sugar Skull – a representation of the standard skull, but enhanced with colours, swirls, flowers and symbols of luck. So for Halloween, if you find the standard skull make-up a little staid, with some creative skill and a little time you can come up with a facial creation to knock-em dead (and you could just wear a poncho as your costume!)
