Themed Wedding Costumes

Friday, August 12th, 2011

August is always a popular time to get married & we are constantly supplying fancy dress outfits for themed weddings. One of the most common themes is Fancy Dress Weddings Medieval / Tudor – which is lovely unless it is too hot! We stock a great range of Historical costumes and we also find that our hire costumes are very popular for this type of thing (mainly because they are of a more superior quality than anything that you could purchase).

We are also finding that a lot of people are wearing 1920s costumes to themed wedding recently, and this theme would work very well in the middle of a hot (we hope) summer. Another great summer wedding theme is the 1950s. There is a good choice of 50s costumes available to purchase and they are not too hot!

If you are thinking about having a themed wedding, take a look at our themed wedding information page and see if we can help you!

We talked about weather yesterday and as we are almost in the middle of August, our minds now turn to thoughts of frozen food, but not necessarily ice lollies. It was on this day in 1930 that Clarence Birdseye patented his method of freezing and packaging food in order to enable it to reach wider and more distant markets and also halt its deterioration process. Of course these days we take frozen food and its ‘antidote’ the microwave for granted, but back in the Thirties this was a major innovation, aided by advances in fridge technology. One of the major benefactors were the producers of fresh vegetables where, provided the produce was frozen as soon as it was picked, it would be safely preserved – all they were saying was give peas a chance!

And whilst you are trying to stomach that atrocious pun, why not celebrate the end of the week with a picnic on the theme of food and drink (pretty obvious really) Oh, and remember – give quiche a… Ok, enough.

Why Have a Fancy Dress Party?

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Why not have a fancy dress party for your next birthday party? Wearing fancy dress makes such a difference to a party as it gets everyone going so quickly. We have lost Props n Frocks Hire Costumes count of the amount of people who come into our fancy dress shop very reluctantly as they have been asked to dress up. When they return their hire costume, or from feedback that we take from our customers, the amount of people who then say that they had a fantastic time and are having their own fancy dress is amazing (just wish we had a pound for every time we hear it!)

So why is a fancy dress party so good?

  • The party gets going immediately. Normally, you would have to wait for your guests to have 1 or 2 drinks to start letting their hair down. When people are in costume, they are playing a part, and you will find that you will not need to wait for the effects of alcohol to get your guests to relax.
  • Guests will mingle. Quite often people group in little cliques. with a fancy dress party, strangers will end up talking to each other, laughing at each others costume and comparing notes. Fancy dress parties are great when you want people to mix and are very popular with engagement parties and why they are popular for themed weddings.
  • Its’ cheaper. Now ladies admit it! You’d like a new dress, shoes and possibly even a matching bag. Hair and make up need to be done – how much does this all cost?Fancy dress is cheaper, you don’t even have to purchase a costume. You may even be able to improvise with some old clothing you already have, especially if you are going as a Punk.
  • The pictures are fantastic
  • The memories will last a lifetime

So, if you have decided to have a fancy dress party, well done you! All you now need is a theme. Check out our blog to see a huge range of various fancy dress themes you can choose from. If you are local, pop into the fancy dress shop and pick up some hire discount cards that you can hand out to your guests. If you are not local, contact us for a discount code that your guests can use on this website for their fancy dress costumes & accessories.

We mentioned a few days ago, how Saint David, the patron Saint of Wales, does not prove as popular as his Irish counterpart Saint Patrick. In honour of the underdogs (or should that be saints) today we would like to mention Saint Piran, who may not be familiar to you unless you happen to have Cornish connections. He is the patron Saint of Cornwall and his feast day is celebrated today, March 5th.  To be honest, we did struggle to come up with costumes that could be used to celebrate this day. The obvious ones being a Cornish pixie, the legendary King Arthur and an ice cream cone (Cornish of course).  If you have any other ideas, we would love to hear from you.

Having a Ball in Fancy Dress

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Fancy dress weddings are really popular, and a great way to get 2 sides of a family to mix and have a real Penguin Masks & Costumes laugh. What better way than to start married life?

Zoe Ball, dressed as a mermaid and her husband Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook), dressed in a penguin costume recently attended Fatboy’s sister’s wedding, held at The Sea Life Centre in Brighton.

The couples’ 2 children also joined  in with the water theme with Woody dressed as a frog and his baby sister, Nelly as a shark.

The Bride and groom tied the know dressed as a crab and a prawn.

I bet the pictures are fantastic!

Medieval Fancy Dress Costume Theme

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Medieval is a great fancy theme, and not only used for themed weddings. We do find our customers do get a bit confused between Tudor and Medieval costumes. People tend to

gravitate towards Tudor style costumes as they tend to be a bit more elaborate, and even though they have been invited to a Medieval themed party, or wedding, they insist on wearing Tudor. If you are holding a Medieval themed event, please be specific as to whether you will allow your guests to wear Tudor as well. If you don’t mind, then fair enough!

The Battle of Hastings took place on October 14th 1066. So, why is this date significant? No reason really, apart from the fact it’s a great opportunity to feature our Medieval range of costumes, which don’t get much of a look-in, compared to others in our collection. As it was a battle, no doubt you might consider a knight costume as an appropriate choice, or perhaps you don’t want to be taken too seriously and would rather have a Jester costume or Medieval page. Naturally when it comes to Medieval costumes rank enters into the situation, so rather than being a lowly peasant or jester, you might want to be seen as a Lord or even a King. Of course we have a fantastic selection. But, what about the ladies? Well aside from the Medieval peasants already mentioned, we do have a wonderful range of gowns for those ladies of leisure sitting at home, doing a bit of tapestry and waiting for their menfolk to return from the battlefield to a sumptuous home-coming feast.

More Fancy Dress Themed Weddings…

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Fancy Dress themed weddings are certainly getting more popular. Just take a look at page 16 in this week’s ‘Pick Me Up’ magazine (12th August – out in the shops now).

Tanya Blacklock made a first date pledge to get married to Ian dressed in full superhero costumes. It started out as a joke, as both of them had been married before, but Ian, only agreed to get married on the one condiiton that they got hitched as Spiderman and Wonder Woman!

Guests were asked to dress as superheroes, villians or any famous character they fancied. ‘We laughed till we cried’ said Tanya when we saw the range of costumes that family and friends were wearing. Costumes included: Batman & Robin, Iron Man, Wolverine, Cruella De’vil, Snow White, Tinkerbel & Peter Pan.

Also featured in the same publication, Kay & Paul Thacker married dressed as Worzel Gummidge & Aunt Sally. Christine & Keith Green married as Shrek & Princess Fiona, Simon & Andrea Bean had a stone age theme and exchanged vows in Fred & Wilma Flintsone costumes - they even had pictures taken in a dinosaur adventure park.

Would you fancy a Star Wars wedding? Duncan Thomson & Sammi Gardner did. They chose the theme because their first date had been to see Star Wars III: Revenge Of The Sith in 2005.

Sian Jenkins & Rupert Hamerton-Fraser had a more traditional themed wedding with a medieval ceremony, including a banquet, jousting and sword fighting. Rupert was a real life knight in shining armour!

And finally…
When zombies took to the streets in a record attempt, Clare Walsh and Steven Curtis were blessed in front of a large crowd of people all wearing zombie costumes.

A themed wedding may not be to everyone’s taste, but these couples have had a day that they will remember for the rest of their lives and all of us at Props n Frocks wish them loads of luck in the future. No one can say that these fancy dress themed weddings were boring!
