Today’s fancy dress theme is TV Nostalgia as many of you may not remember a time when there weren’t television
programmes 24 hours a day, plus a wide range of channels to choose from, but believe us – it happened. In fact today marks the anniversary in 1957, of the cessation of a very significant event in the broadcasting day – the so-called ‘Toddlers Truce’.
Once upon a time, when only the BBC was broadcasting television, it transmitted afternoon programmes (including the legendary ‘Watch with Mother’) until 5.00pm, then closed down for an hour to allow children to be put to bed, before restarting at 6.00pm with its evening shows! It could do this, because with no competition and being funded by licence fees, it could virtually make its own rules. All that changed when the ITV commercial service started and revenue was directly linked to the broadcasting of programmes with adverts. So, after negotiation, the Toddler Truce hour was dropped. Bearing this in mind, our theme for the day is TV Nostalgia.
