Victorian Fancy Dress Ideas

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Today, we celebrate the Victorian era with our fancy dress theme. Just a couple of days ago we were talking about making a first impression and Girls Victorian Fancy Dress Outfitstoday we head off at a slightly different tangent by celebrating the birth of the French impressionist painter Jean Auguste Renoir, who was born on February 25th 1841, i.e. 170 years ago. He was one of the early advocates of the impressionist style and his vibrant portraits reflect the costumes and social history of the Victorian and Edwardian era. The Victorian era in particular, is one we are often asked for, particularly in connection with the school curriculum, where we have costumes for both poor and rich Victorian children.

We recently designed a range of school curriculum costumes including costumes for boys and girls for the Victorian era. They have proved to be very popular for use for dress up days at school.

The girls Victorian costumes include:

  • Dress with an elasticated waistband
  • Pinafore
  • Mop Cap

The boys Victorian Costumes include:

  • Top
  • Waistcoat
  • Long Shorts
  • Cap
  • Neck Tie

We also stock a Rich girls Victorian costume and a pinafore and mop cap set – ideal if you have a dress that you can use already at home. We also offer a waistcoat and cap set for the boys as well as a budget range of Victorian girls & Boys costumes.

Western Fancy Dress Theme

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Our fancy dress theme for your consideration today is western Fancy dress, however, as today we celebrate the worksCowboy Outfits of two writers, both of whom have had screen success with adaptations of their books you could also choose books as your costume theme, the choice is up to you…

The first author, Charles Dickens, probably needs no introduction, as several of his books, which tell of life in Victorian England, have been turned into films, TV serials and even musicals, notably Oliver Twist. Naturally at Props n Frocks we have some fantastic Victorian costumes, for both young and old. The Victorian era can be one of our more popular costume themes, particularly when it crops up in the school curriculum, where we can offer period costumes for either rich or poor children. We designed a brilliant range of kids Victorian costumes

Incidentally the reason for the celebration is that Charles Dickens was born on February 7th 1812.  Next year, will be the 200th anniversary of his birth, so we are expecting several commemorative bicentennial events to crop up during 2012 (which will also see the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics in London).

The other author born on February 7th, but this time in 1867, is Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This might be an unknown name to many, but those of a certain age may remember a TV show entitled ‘Little House on the Prairie’, which was based upon her books and was preceded by a made-for-TV movie. It also featured in Jackanory, the BBC’s ‘story-time’ programme during the 1960s. Set in the American Mid-West of the 19th Century a Wild West/Western Theme could be a popular choice. We stock a large range of Western costumes and a huge range of western accessories including Indian weapons and cowboy guns.

A Christmas Carol |Victorian | Dickensian Fancy Dress Theme

Three fancy dress themes today, although they are all basically the same thing. After the adventure of the Christmas Presents in the Nutcracker

yesterday, today we celebrate a different type of Christmas Present, noting  the publication of another seasonal staple ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens in 1843. The book was somewhat unusual insofar as it was published in ‘staves’ instead of chapters, but the essence of the story – a miserly man, Ebenezer Scrooge, is shown aspects of his life by three spirits, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Yet To Come – is known to most even if they have not read the book, due to there having been several filmed versions, including one by the Muppets!

Whilst a Dickensian theme might be worth suggesting, many find the costuming a little too complex (not too many Dickensian costumes on the Net) or expensive, so with Christmas now less than a week away, why not allow people to create their own costumed concepts of Christmas Past, Present or Future?  You could also advise people to wear Victorian costumes, always a good theme for this festive time of the year. Don’t forget Moulin Rouge, Burlesque and the Wild West (Saloon girl costumes) are all from this era, so you do not need ot stick to a traditional Victorian costume.

If this is still too difficult, why not just have a Christmas, or ‘My Best Christmas Present Ever’ party. We thing the ‘Best Christmas Present Ever’ would be a great theme. You may remember getting Cluedo, so why not dress up as Colnel Mustard, or Miss Scarlet – get the idea? I have a story regarding a Monopoly game one year (I will not bore you with it, but I could always dress up as a dog as this was my favourite marker!)
