Obviously September 11th is now a date lodged in the annals of infamy, being the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers in New York and also on the Pentagon, but the date is also significant in Scottish history: Not only did William ‘Braveheart’ Wallace defeat the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 but co-incidentally (or perhaps not) it was on this date in 1997 that the Scottish people voted to devolve and set up their own Parliament.
Although the 1995 Braveheart film was a somewhat fictionalised version of events, the character himself seems to have captured the imagination and we still get requests for the outfit all these years on. Given that males are not always keen to dress up, this costume can tick a few of the right boxes – it has the macho elements of a warrior and hero and it offers the opportunity to wield a weapon – not that that’s always a plus point in a confined party environment. Complementary female outfits are a bit of a challenge (anything with tartan would not have existed in those days) but given the opportunity there are some potentially suitable female warrior costumes which could work.
