So it’s July 4th & American Independence Day – one of the excuses to work with a red/white/blue
costume/colour fancy dress theme this month (another is on July 14 for the Bastille Day French National holiday). The Day commemorates the moment in 1776, when the thirteen American colonies, which had hitherto been at war with Britain over various issues, declared themselves independent and no longer part of the British Empire. The Declaration is famous for its passage – ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’
