Music Icons Fancy Dress Theme

Music Icons is today’s fancy dress theme as two pop legends celebrate their birthdays today. Today’s the anniversary of the birth of both The King of Rock n Roll himself, Elvis Presley (1935) and David Bowie (1947). Between them they have influenced the music and musicians of successive decades. This gives us a chance to mention in passing that should you choose to use their anniversaries as the basis of a Decades or Pop Icons event, we’re currently offering some really good deals on retro fashion costumes. Details can be found elsewhere on this site.

What is not in doubt was that to this day Presley retains records for the most hits at every cut-off point (Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, etc.). Needless to say, true Elvis fans need no excuse to celebrate his music and films but this is an opportunity for the rest of us to get involved.

Meanwhile we thought we’d also focus on the fact that we’ve recently seen the 25^th anniversary of the fantasy film ‘Labyrinth’, in which Bowie starred as Jareth the Goblin King. The film involved other major talents such as George Lucas, Terry Jones (of Monty Python) and, possibly most important in giving the movie its unique style, a massive array of characters from Jim Henson’s Creature Workshop. The film was a masterpiece of fantasy and although Jim Henson himself has passed on, his greatest creations, the Muppets continue to live on, returning to our movie screens at the end of this month (and there are actually some Muppet costumes becoming available!).

Today is all about Musical Stars, so that is our fancy dress theme suggestion. The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself, Elvis Presley was born on this day in 1935, and 12 years later in 1947, David Bowie entered the world. Though ‘Ziggy Stardust’ was probably Bowie’s most memorable creation, he has constantly reinvented both himself and his music throughout his career. ‘Heroes’, which was co-written with Brian Eno and released by Bowie in 1977, was recently issued as a cover charity version by the X-Factor Finalists in 2010.

Given that David Bowie started his musical career in the late 1960s, and Elvis Presley started his career in the mid 1950s and either one or both of them have had hits through every decade since, the Musical Stars theme could even be broadened out to ‘come as something/someone from the past 60 years’. That would give you plenty of opportunity to let loose your creative flair and spoil yourself from our fantastic choice of costumes.

Elvis Forever Concert In Hyde Park

Many fans of ‘The King’ are expected to attend the concert in London’s Hyde Park today in Elvis costumes, or wearing Elvis Wigs & Glasses.

A host of stars including Tom Jones, Scouting For Girls., Michael Ball and Imelda May to name just a few, will sing Elvis’ greatest hits. Hosted by Chris Evans and Priscilla Presley, this event is a wonderful way to celebrate what would have been Elvis’ 75th year.

Mid August 16th is a fantastic time for a Musical Icons costume party, with two great stars leading the way. It was on 16th August 1977, the undisputed “King of Rock n Roll” Elvis Presley, died of a heart attack aged just 42, in Memphis, Tennessee. Props n Frocks stocks Elvis Costumes and all the Elvis Accessories you could need including Elvis wigs, glasses, rings and medallions.

On the same day in 1958 legendary performer, actress and all-round World’s Greatest Best-selling Female Recording Artist, Madonna (born Madonna Louise Ciccone) was born in Bay City, Michigan. We stock Madonna Costumes (both her 80′s ‘Material Girl’ look and the 90s gold pointy boob costumes).

Also on this day in musical history Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr as the Beatles’ drummer in 1962 (of course, we stock Beatles Costumes and accessories including pudding bowl wigs and dark round glasses). At the 1969 Woodstock Festival, the second day featured such greats as Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Sly & The Family Stone and Jefferson Airplane. The day started early, at 4am , with The Who embarking on a 25 song set, including highlights from their new album ‘Tommy’, which had been released in May. So it’s time to see it, hear it and feel it and strut your stuff dressed up as one of your musical heroes, possibly with the help of a karaoke machine.

A day for scandalous behaviour. On this day in 1956 Elvis Presley premiered his new single ‘Hound Dog’ on TV. He performed in front of a live audience who were outraged by Elvis’ suggestive hip movements during his rendition of this soon-to-be classic hit. If you want to dress up, we stock a great range of Elvis costumes and accessories (including wigs and medallions) to get you in the mood. Meanwhile, in Britain on this day in 1963, the Profumo Affair, a political scandal that had gripped the nation, came to a head as the War Secretary John Profumo resigned over allegations of an affair which could have compromised State Security.

Why not have a scandalous themed fancy dress party. This will get your guests thinking and makes it a lot of fun. We will produce an information page on scandalous costume ideas, but you could dress up in a punk costume (caused a huge scandal in the 70s and 80s) or in a Marilyn Monroe costume – did she die or was she murdered? Get the idea?
