We were mentioning Oxford’s Alice Day yesterday and today they are staging a caucus race For those of you who don’t know what this is, we thought we would take a few moments to enlighten you.

It has American origins (weren’t we noting earlier in the week how Americanisms are getting everywhere?) and has to do with the way several committees meet to choose political candidates for elections. Lewis Carroll was so unimpressed with this supposedly democratic but weak system of selection that in the Alice book he satirised it with a somewhat pointless race. The event was presided over by a dodo, with everyone running in circles and when they stopped, all were declared winners and given prizes. So now you know. In the meantime, needless to say, when it comes to the race for costume prizes, our customers will always be winners.

Today is the birthday of author Terry Pratchett. Although he is becoming well-known for his high-profile spokesmanship on behalf of those with Alzheimer’s and related conditions, he is also the creator of Discworld. This flat world, carried through the cosmos on the backs of four elephants standing upon a giant space turtle, is populated with a rich array of characters. From time to time we have even been called upon to help recreate a few of them for the purposes of a Book Week or local fan convention. Rincewind, the inept wizard found in the earlier books, is one popular choice, but other books in the several dozen Discworld novels have involved themselves with everything from pseudo-Egyptian history, opera to the early days of movie-making in the World’s own version of Hollywood. As with the video games and comic books mentioned earlier this week, we cannot claim an encyclopaedic knowledge of every character in this fantasy world, but if you have left enough time, bring us a description and we will see what we can do to help.

My Favourite Fantasy Fancy Dress Theme

Maybe You've Always Wanted to Win the Grand National?

Jockey Costume

Maybe You’ve Always Wanted to Win the Grand National?

My Favourite Fantasy we think should be today’s fancy dress theme for November 13th, as it was in 1940 (seventy years ago) that Disney’s Fantasia was premiered in New York City.  The film was based around various works of classical music, interpreted in pictures. Amongst the offerings was Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a comic ballet (Dance of the Hours) which was performed by elephants, hippos, ostriches and alligators, plus the story of evolution, as well as the forces of dark and light.  If dressing up as an animal or Disney character is not quite your idea of a fantasy, (although we can naturally accommodate both) and you would like something more exotic, come and see how Props n Frocks can help you make your dreams come true.

Thinking ‘outside of the box’ a bit, you could dress up as your own personal fantasy, this means that if you have always thought that Marilyn Monroe was the person you would have liked to have been, now is the oppportunity to dress up in a Marilyn costume.

Other costume ideas you could also use for this theme include ideas from the theme myths & legends, including fairies, Devils and mermaids, to name just a few examples. So although at first this costume theme seems quite difficult, once you start thinking about potential costumes it opens it right up to a huge amount of costumes that you could wear.
