It was the American author Mark Twain who said that “clothes make the man” and this is particularly true when it comes to costumes and films. Yesterday, we spoke about those movie characters who adopt their screen persona and those who do not. Today is the birthday of the American actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke, who was born back in 1925, thus making him 86. As with Bill Nighy yesterday, this is another actor who does not really ‘dress-up’ when it comes to the characters he portrays. These days he is probably more associated with TV ‘whodunnit’ Diagnosis Murder, but over his career aside from his own ground-breaking TV sitcom ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’, which in October 2011 celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first show he has been seen in movies such as Mary Poppins (Bert the Sweep) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, playing Caractacus Potts.

As these characters were both based in the same historical time frame it may be that just by donning the clothes of a different era does not automatically change your persona. Other items are often required to help you become truly believable as the character you are aiming to portray. At PNF we not only have the costumes for a wide range of film characters, but also make-up, wigs, masks, etc., to help you truly identify with them.  So, whatever your movie choice, why not see how we can help.
