Gangster & Molls Fancy Dress Theme

Today we are having a Gangster & Molls Fancy dress party…Gangster Fancy Dress Accessories

As you hopefully know, today is Valentines Day. From the costuming point of view, things can go either of two ways – it could be all Hearts, Flowers and Famous Romantic Couples or, as that can be a little obvious, some people choose the Gangsters and Molls fancy dress theme (as indeed, we did!) theme in deference to the St. Valentines Day Massacre of 1929 Chicago.

An essential element of any self-respecting gangster impression is the ‘tommy-gun’, but in recent years these essential props have undergone a startling make-over – they have changed colour so that that no-one can mistake them for the real thing. Whilst we respect the reasons for the change, we do appreciate that toting a light blue or pink gun can undermine the gravitas of your gangster impression (we are minded of the protestations of ‘Mr Pink’ in ‘Reservoir Dogs’). Obviously we know of some people who, having bought their gun-props, have taken it on themselves to restore them to a more menacing colour, but equally obviously, we cannot condone it. The alternative is to maintain the threat of menace with a mean-looking violin case!

As you can see from our image (right) that ladies can dress up in a sexy Gangster costume, and a lot of the gangster accessories are suitable for both men and women. Alternatively, ladies can also choose to wear a 1920/30s flapper costume.

As well as some great 20s/30s costumes that are available to purchase, or to hire, we also stock a large range of accessories that you can buy, either to add to a complete costume, or to use as a base to put your own costumes together at home. To be honest, it is very easy to put together a gangster outfit from a dark suit and a few of our fabulous gangster accessories.

Some of the Gangster accessories that we stock:

  • Trilby Hats
  • White Ties
  • Spats (go over your own shoes to create a period looking shoe)
  • Tommy Guns – yes, in blue & pink
  • Gangster Moustache
  • Braces
  • False Shirt Fronts
  • Cigars

1940s Costumes & Uniforms

We cannot get through the summer without at least one mention of World War II and in particular the Battle of Britain, which commemorates its 70th anniversary this year. Now most 1940s costume requests we receive tend to be for uniforms, particularly when it comes to males (makes them look ‘dashing’, don’t you know!) but sometimes original uniforms can be a wee bit small, not to mention hot and heavy. The replica uniforms that Props n Frocks currently offer for sale tend to be American based, a 1940s American GI Costumes for men and women, so hiring may be a better bet, particularly if you are heading off to the likes of Goodwood during August or September, or the Twinwood festival (August 28th-30th).

At Props n Frocks, we also stock a range of accessories such as seamed stockings, a gas mask and that essential requirement for those in uniform, the Brigadier or Wing Commander Moustache (if you haven’t cultivated your own). For those preferring civvies, our range of pinstripe Gangster Costumes will work for those 1940s Spivs, and if you have your own suit, you could include a Spiv moustache and a trilby hat, to complete the look.
