May is a very popular time for masquerade balls, giving men & women the chance to dress up & wear one of our beautiful Masquerade eyemasksmasquerade eyemasks.

Props & Frocks stocks a huge range of eyemasks with designs for the ladies as well as the men.

Eye masks are secured either with elastic (as this image) or on a headband. We also stock a wide range of masks on a stick that you hold up to your face.

Feather eyemasks remain very popular but the flash may make them look a slightly different colour on our website images. If the feather colour is extremely important, please contact one of our team who will advise what the feather colours are.

Today is the birthday of Noel Fielding, one of the team which created ‘The Mighty Boosh’ comedy series and, more recently, the eponymous ‘Noel Fielding’s Luxury Comedy’. He is also known for his work on the TV music quiz ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’. A notable feature of his work is the surreal quality of both the humour and the characters he has created. The ability to create wild and wacky costumes and characters is part of the whole fancy dress experience and at Props & Frocks we applaud anyone starting from scratch and assembling their own unique design. Sometimes it can be difficult to find all the accessories and props you might need. Our website cannot showcase all the thousands of products we hold, so if you want the complete experience, why not visit us here at Battlesbridge, Essex?

Masquerade Fancy Dress Theme

A Masquerade Ball, or fancy dress party is an elegant way to spend an evening.  Not only, does it have the overall effect of a

fancy dress party (barriers are broken down very early, so the party gets going really early and strangers will speak to each other) but, it is also a very cost effective way of doing it.

Did you know that on  December 11th , in 1769  apparently, the first venetian blinds were patented. Was it not the late great Miles Kington who postulated that ‘In the land of the blind, the curtain-maker suffers?’. It was, but that possibly seems scarcely relevant in a costuming blog until you speculate what the Venetians were actually hiding behind their blinds, curtains and of course masks. Fancy-dress and costuming are all about taking on a different persona, and when it comes to matters of masquerade, the Venetians were (and still are) masters. As we wend our way slowly towards the Christmas Season, why not make the most of our wide selection of eyemasks? Doubtless you might have invested in a new festive frock or two, and even if you do not need to hire , or purchase, a costume from us, we have a wide range of Venetian style masks in styles and colours to complement your ensemble and add to your air of mystery.

Props n Frocks stocks one of the largest ranges of masquerade eyemasks online, but remember, if you are near our fancy dress shop in Essex, you are welcome to pop in and have a look at them. Take a look at our Masquerade eyemasks

Our range of venitian masks includes:

  • Masks on a stick – very dramatic
  • Masks secured with elastic – saves you having to hold the mask all night.
  • Eyemasks on a headband – you can normally move the mask up to the top of your head if you want to move it from the front of your face to eat or drink
  • Mens eyemasks – from plain to the more elaborate

Carnival Fancy Dress Theme Ideas

Carnival is a brilliant fancy dres theme to extend our summer a little bit more…
September 7th is the National Day of Brazil. Brazil, as someone once said, is ‘Where the nuts come from’ although these days most people would associate Brazil with either football or carnival. (The Monty Python fans citing a film by Terry Gilliam are just showing off). So which do you think we’d choose for today’s costume theme idea? Tough call, but it’s probably Carnival.

Although originally Carnival was to do with Lent (coming from Carne-vale –‘Farewell to the flesh’), in this country we tend to prefer running our carnivals in the summer, and early Autumn, when there’s a better chance of fine weather: If you have to hang around in a costume on the back of a lorry, it works better when its warm, although that said, there are some hardy souls in the West of England who spend their October/November evenings involved in the spectacular illuminated carnivals which tour the towns of Somerset and Avon.

But we digress. Returning to today’s excuse to celebrate, Brazilian carnival is a rather more exuberant affair than, say, that seen in Britain (apart from our Notting Hill Carnival) or Venice. In the event, the carnival style may be dictated by the weather – outdoors, some hot Latino colour and dance (Rumba costumes), indoors the more stately masked ball.

So you could base your fancy dress costume on a British carnival affair. This tends to work best if you go to the fancy dress party as a group. Groups of people, or organisations tend to theme their own float – if you think about it, you can chose whatever theme you want. Pirate costumes are always a popular choice because not only is there a great range of pirate costumes that you can purchase but also a huge range of pirate accessore is you can purchase to complete your own outfits. How about going as a Carnival Queen? – all hair, make up and a long dress.

Carnival is also very popular on the continent, with everyone dressing up and getting into the spirit of the event. There ar eno real costume themes, you can basically wear what you like, but you will find Georgian / Venetian costumes to be very popular. This is also the birth place of the masked ball, so why not have a Masquerade Mask party instead of a full blown costume party. Props n Frocks has one of the largest selections of eyemasks on the internet, with a huge choice of masks for men and women.

Whatever your choice of Carnival theme, it will bring a party atmosphere to your fancy dress party!
