A choice of possible fancy dress theme today as it is St Andrew’s Day in Scotland, but we have noticed that many Scots tend to save their best celebrations for
Hogmanay/New Year and Burns Night in January. So instead we will note the fact that 125 years ago, in 1886 saw the first revue by the Folies Bergère in France. Whilst the Moulin Rouge is arguably the more famous of the French venues, the Folies have retained their mystique.
From the costuming point of view, we have noticed an evolution from the popularity of Saloon Girls (always more colourful than cowgirls at a Country & Western event), through interest in the can-can styles (thanks in part to the 2001 Moulin Rouge film which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year) to the current enthusiasm for the corset and skirt (or tutu) burlesque styles. Admittedly most of these outfits make the legs a focal point so you need to be confident to carry them off, but here at Props n Frocks we have a wide range of outfits in all shapes and styles to suit almost every requirement.
As we have found that many people find Moulin Rouge a difficult costume theme, we have produced an information page, full Moulin Rouge costume ideas for both men and women. We hope it gives you plenty of inspiration, but if you need more help, email or give us a call – we are here to help!
