We also have some ‘surprises’ that we can’t talk about, otherwise they wouldn’t be a surprise would they?
Entertainment starts from 10.30 until 4pm. come and enjoy the fun and raise money for 2 deserving charities – Essex air Ambulance & Great Ormond street Hospital – Gastro Unit

Yesterday we were mentioning American Independence Day and today we look at the way elements of American culture have worked their way into aspects of the costume trade business. Leaving aside the fact that a good many of the superheroes currently onscreen at the movies are of American origin (where are the British when you need them?), most would point to our more enthusiastic celebration of Halloween as a major legacy of US influence. In fact Halloween has a perfectly decent Celtic pedigree and if anything is a re-import from the States (whether it is an improvement is a different matter). Of greater interest at this time of the year is the Prom – the end-of-school-year event seen in films such as ‘Grease’ and ‘Back to the Future’ and increasingly in recent years ‘adopted’ by educational institutions of all levels in this country. During these times we find ourselves regarded as a potentially cheaper back-up to the formal dress-hire companies, although some schools may be creative enough to see the potential in a fancy-dress prom. After all, the prom usually has a theme (although ‘Under the Sea’ seems a little over-used when it comes to the movies), so why not work within that theme for the dress code?

Today is going to be a long day, it being the Summer Solstice. Of course the real enthusiasts will have been up at sparrow-chirp (or sparrow-cough in some cities) to see in the dawn, but for most it will be a normal day, aside from the obligatory footage of the celebrants at Stonehenge. What you actually get up to probably rather depends upon the weather, but it’s midsummer in mid-week and, of interest to some, the quarter-finals of the Euro footie start tomorrow. It is easy to make the assumption (as some broadcasters do) that everyone supports the England team, but with today’s multicultural society, there are plenty of communities and groups interested in the fortunes of the other teams. So, with the true summer now ahead of us, and hopefully the best yet to come in terms of wall-to-wall sport on TV, why not take advantage of the longest day and get out and about?
