Tudor Man – Ideal for Stratford

this a base for a brilliant fancy dress theme?

Although this costume theme may seem a little daunting at first, we can offer you a huge range of potential London Underground costume ideas to make choosing your costume very easy. so whether you are looking to do something very simple (Beehive wig for High Barnet) or more involved (Wombles for Wimbledon), we have the tube costume for you.

Mid-week and we note that today many people are celebrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day – don’t say we never tell you anything! Historically, GIS is what we used to call a map, but of course with the developments of technology (which we seem to be spending a little time celebrating this week), the field covers a very much wider area nowadays (in more ways than one). It also involves much more exciting things like being able to check what your cat does at night, thanks to its GPS collar, and find out if people are actually ‘on the train’ or sitting in the station buffet.

And how can we celebrate this day through the medium of costume? (We have to say that, looking at the map of GIS events, only London and Plymouth seem to be doing anything for it here in the South of England). It’s a long time since we suggested the concept of a Scavanger Hunt, where teams are set tasks to achieve on a given route or area, whilst also collecting various every-day and/or unusual items. Although, in these fuel-conscious days, the car-based ones are less common, ones on foot and, of course, in fancy dress, can be a great fundraising idea, especially as you might be looking for something to do for Children in Need, coming up at the end of this week.

Today in 1907 the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR) opened as an underground railway. Later in the 1920s, this line was connected to the City and South London Railway (C&SLR) but because the initials were getting a little out of hand, it later became known as a major part of what we now know as the Northern Line. Here in Essex, with Ongar as an outpost of the Tube network, we occasionally get the ‘Come Dressed as the Name of a Tube Station Theme’ crop up. For some it is not too much of a problem – Angel and Blackfriars are no-brainers, but after that you might have to start thinking creatively. This is one situation where a theme’s outfits – ‘Tube Station Costumes’ – don’t come off-the-peg on the Internet (although there are a few chat rooms with suggestions). You therefore might need to come to somewhere like ourselves for help (or at least consult our specialist information sheet on this very topic, to be found elsewhere on this site).

Today, in 1745, we find the first recorded women’s cricket match. Rising above any scope for feminist jibes, we know we now live in an age where women have proved themselves equal to men on a level playing-field (although some sports still give them a head-start). We’d also note that the England Woman’s Cricket and Football teams have recently done as well as, if not better than, their male colleagues. Enough said. In the meantime, on this date in 1803, in South London, what was arguably the world’s first public railway – the Surrey Iron Railway – opened. It linked Croydon to Wandsworth, although the pedants would note that, being horsedrawn, it’s not what most would call a railway – George Stephenson pioneered the steam-powered locomotive and railway in 1825. Of course early train journeys were hindered by the public perception that travelling at speed could be hazardous to health, but not withstanding, we nominate ‘Fast Ladies’ as our Theme of the Day.

Keeping with the train theme, why not have an ‘London Underground Station fancy dress party? We have written an information page on this fantastic theme for a costume party, so take a look at Costume ideas For London Underground Stations
